This is legit the most mind-boggling criticism I've heard of the new series.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-28 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
That's some nonsense

(Anonymous) 2017-01-28 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Except dumbledore's going to be in the sequel

(Anonymous) 2017-01-28 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't think that.

Newt was obviously born later than Dumbledore.

A lot of people had issues with Grindelwald, plus he's the main big villain of that time period. He was basically Wizard Hitler. That isn't surprising.

I don't think Newt has too much in common with Dumbledore other than Obscurials. And there are usually more than one person interested in a given topic.

I don't recall Dumbledore being super into animals.

You never know.

I don't recall Dumbledore being super into animals. Maybe he learned how to hide it after that thing with Aberforth and the goat?

Wow, that is...some impressive reaching? I'm even gay as fuck and critical of JKR's handling of Dumbledore's homosexuality, and I think this is going way too far lmao

...bwuh?

You are really reaching, nonny.

A movie about a younger Dumbledore probably would have been more interesting.

While I don't think Fantastic Beasts was specifically made to avoid the gay... the movies and books so far actually have avoided the gay even with characters that are supposedly gay. So yeah, there's that, and it would be nice to see gay representation in the new films.

I dunno, Creedence and not!Grindelwald gave off pretty gay vibes.

I haven't read the book in a long long long time though, so I can't remember the real gay.

well I think that was mostly one-sided but yeah

there wasn't any real gay in the books, just really tacit maybe-gay in Dumbledore's backstory, presented very circumspectly, and later confirmed to be actual gay by the author.

however they are apparently making a movie featuring young!Dumbledore so maybe (hopefully) there will be actual Dumbles/Grindy in it.

I felt Grindlegraves' demanding to know why Dumbledore was so interested in helping Newt in the interrogation room was very telling. It's not in your face gay, but it hints at that past relationship.

Also his treatment of Credence was pretty overtly gay. Sure, try to spin it as hero worship if you want, but nah man, Credence was head over heels for that handsome wizard that saved him and Grindlegraves did everything to encourage that feeling to his own ends.

I didn't know anything about the Obscurials prior to the film so I can't comment on the relevance, but LOL...two different characters at odds with a bad guy with wildly differing relations to him? Hmm.

0/10, try harder.

I heard that stance before and no idea where it came from, did not really follow promotion of this film. To me Grindlewald was a tiny bit of jealous of Newt. Unlike anon above me - did not really mind how Dumbledore was written with romance but 6th book did read to me like they were together. It is crap as Dumbledore is never mentioned to have other partners - sure it is due to students not interested in spying but then again ... offhand mention would not hurt.

Nah. It was more a full on rip-off of Jean's story arc from X-men.

Aren't they leading up to Dumbledore though? Presumably they want to set up the non HP characters first so they can get people who wouldn't necessarily be mad on Potter to see the film without knowing the rest of canon?
