Lillie's story got to me more than any other Pokemon character's, with the possible exception of N. I spent a chunk at the beginning of the game thinking that she was just going to be an annoying hanger-on character, like the "friends" in XY whose names I don't even remember, but I was completely wrong. She's the emotional heart of the story, and she seems more like the main character than the PC does.

(I named my Solgaleo Nebby because of her.)

Man, I'm not saying you're wrong to feel that way, because you're not. At the same time, someone in Bobby's place in life with his experiences would by no means have encountered that idea about language and how to use it. And I don't think that touches his goodness as a person.

It's fucking complicated though, and would certainly have been better had the writers chose not to write him that way initially, which they could easily have done.
