It can get pretty deep. They have storylines that deal with some serious issues. The main story in this game talks about child and animal abuse, parental abandonment, teenage runaways, and a lot of stuff. Of course it's still lighthearted (your rival is obsessed with a local treat and is frequently seen stuffing his face, your pokedex talks to you because it has a sassy ghost in it, and so on).
