Reaching out to legislators

(Anonymous) 2017-01-30 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I live in a red state, and I've been trying to reach my senator all day to urge him not to approve Betsy Devos as education secretary, but the line is always busy. I want to be happy about that, but I'm afraid people are seeing all tbe same facebook posts I've seen that say "even if you're not from one of these states, call anyway" and actual constituents are being shut out by people this guy doesn't even have to pretend to care about.

So what do you guys think about appealing to lawmakers who aren't yours? I'm in this weird place where, outside of national, organized protests and marches, I don't like it, and I don't think it works, but at the same time, I've got no problem with out of state donations to support candidates a donor thinks would be best for the country.

This is what email is for. Or Twitter.

More than one way to flay a feline.

Ivve also heard tbat email and Twitter are easily ignored. Phone calls and maybe letters, if you're in time, are the way to go because its easier to prove you're a constituents and harder to ignore.

Email and Twitter don't so shit

Well, if they can't get through, what do you suggest they do?

Snail mail can also be effective, but if something is time-sensitive, they might vote before they ever get your damn letter.

I have never heard the advice to call people who don't represent you and I don't think it's a good idea. They represent the people who live in their state or district and that's who they're obligated to listen to.

When these people are asked where they're from, as these offices tend to ask when people call, are they lying and claiming they live in that state?

Yeah I could see an argument for it in the cases of people who clearly harbor national ambitions, but outside of that, no

Have you tried their district office number?

Re: Reaching out to legislators

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
What do you mean? I've been calling his DC office...

Re: Reaching out to legislators

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
They should have a local number as well.

Re: Reaching out to legislators

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
They usually have two numbers, the DC one and their home state one. At least all mine do.

Re: Reaching out to legislators

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Call the home office as well.

They usually have an office in their home state/district, usually listed off their home page if you Google them. That might be more accessible than their DC office.

I've recently seen people saying to call no matter if they're your representative or not, and while I'm no expert, it just seems off.

Re: Reaching out to legislators

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure they're legally not supposed to listen to anyone from outside their district, because if that were the case people from one state could influence what happens in another state and it's not fair to the people who live there.

Re: Reaching out to legislators

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT: That's honestly pretty fair. It sucks in situations like these, but in normal circumstances it's fair.

Re: Reaching out to legislators

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I think you misunderstood me, or maybe I'm misunderstanding you. I'm saying in general if people in Wisconsin got to influence the laws in Massachusetts, it wouldn't be fair to the people in Massachusetts, which is why representatives can only listen to their constituents.

Re: Reaching out to legislators

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT: No, you're misunderstanding me. I'm agreeing with you. :) I just mean it sucks in a case where you want to influence a national issue, not a state one, but that I also understand why the rule exists as it does.

Re: Reaching out to legislators

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure there's nothing illegal about it, but it does raise questions s about what's morally right.

Re: Reaching out to legislators

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Make sure you have the right number. Some have multiple ones.

Re: Reaching out to legislators

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't call a congressperson who doesn't represent me. That seems ineffective because they're not required to listen to me. I did call mine because I work in special ed and Betsy Devos scares the shit out of me, but I couldn't get through. It's very frustrating.
