I'm usually the same as you; it makes me really uncomfortable to see distress, especially in kids. My maternal instinct is nuts, I just can't handle it.

I watched the first few episodes of this series recently and it didn't feel too bad, though, but I don't know how grim it's actually supposed to get. The whole "stop watching this isn't happy" dark tone has so far come across to me as more quirky than anything, but maybe I won't have much luck further in, either. I guess orphan storylines are common enough where I'm not too affected, but..
