[A Series of Unfortunate Events]

(Anonymous) 2017-01-30 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't feel bad for it! I loved the book series but am finding the show so much harder to go through because I'm older and these kids are...young.

Holy hell.

I don't think that's anything to be embarrassed about.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-30 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a perfectly valid reason, OP.

I noped the fuck out of that whole shitfuck when I watched the Jim Carrey movie version. I hadn't read the books, I knew nothing about it, I went into the theatre expecting a nice movie for kids.

I still rage when I think about it.

Who he hell takes KIDS to see that? It's nightmare fodder. So hopeless and bleak and terrifying. The paedo wedding scene nearly made me throw up.

I'm not going to watch this fucking show and I'm just stopping by here to rage some more. Why it needed another adaptation is beyond me.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-30 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Why it needed another adaptation is beyond me.

Because the books are really popular and a lot of people thought the movie didn't really do them justice.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-30 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I read the books as a kid and they really resonated with me as someone who was experiencing child abuse at the time. IMO, the strength of the book was presenting these things while always reiterating that these were awful terrible things done by bad people, which I understood better than cheerful stories.

Not saying you have to like it or anything, but yeah, some kids resonate more with bleakness then happiness.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's your right to hate it but idk why you'd think it was a nice happy story based on the title?

"Who he hell takes KIDS to see that? It's nightmare fodder."

This just in, kids can only watch happy fun time stuff. No grim stuff allowed.

Using their mutual bond, intelligence, creativity and resourcefulness to navigate a corrupt world full of over-the-top villains and secret dealings? Kids love that kind of adventure.

The horribleness in the story is always tempered with wit, absurdity, and a deliberately detached ironic style, so I never found reading the books or watching the show to be a particularly intense experience.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Not trying to mock you, but statistically movies for kids are a lot more likely to be darker

Please tell me I'm not the only one who found this show unbearably terrible. I am so disappointed. It's clear they were depending on NPH to carry this. My goodness, it's bad.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care for it, either. Maybe it's because I'm not a huge NPH fan (don't hate him, just indifferent) but the series isn't my cup of tea.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I enjoy the children's scenes. But NPH's are all so cringeworthy. I'm hoping that's just what the character's supposed to be like... or at least that's how I'm going to attribute it.

I got through 30 minutes of the first episode and had to give up.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm usually the same as you; it makes me really uncomfortable to see distress, especially in kids. My maternal instinct is nuts, I just can't handle it.

I watched the first few episodes of this series recently and it didn't feel too bad, though, but I don't know how grim it's actually supposed to get. The whole "stop watching this isn't happy" dark tone has so far come across to me as more quirky than anything, but maybe I won't have much luck further in, either. I guess orphan storylines are common enough where I'm not too affected, but..

I'm with you on this one. I loved the books, but their narration is so wonderful that I didn't realize how bleak the events of the story would be if you were just straight-up watching them.

You know, I'm actually kinda surprised people are able to support this. Don't get me wrong, I dig it, I'm just surprised I've not seen anyone trying to organise a boycott or anything.

I have virtually no tolerance for children in distress. I can't watch it. So, me too, OP.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I couldn't get to this show at all. Not because I felt bad for the children, but because it was do mind-numbingly boring. I've seen the movie before and after that I felt like the show had nothing to offer me, but a prolonged slog through the plot. Every time Lemony Snicket told me to stop watching because this is soooo mizerable and sad, I was pretty tempted to do so. Am I desensitised to violence if I felt absolutely no concern or horror towards the events in the show?

That makes sense tbh, we've all got our limits when it comes to fiction and if 'kids in distress' is yours then that's more than fine and nothing to be embarrassed about.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I think the reason is you're viewing it as an adult and not the way a kid would. I can take any piece of children's media and do this. Like, Dora the Explorer. Why is she wandering around in the forest when there are evil foxes and trolls and who knows what else lurking around? I'm really worried about Dora. But a 5 year old identifies with her thinks about how fun it would be to go on adventures like that. It's the same thing with the Baudelaires. They're the heroes of the story and heroes go into danger and fight monsters and face struggle at every turn, and if they didn't they wouldn't be interesting or fun. And I promise you, kids already think about what would happen to them if they lost their parents, if they were placed with an evil guardian, etc. Just look at Cinderella, usually the first story kids learn.

But anyway, (as someone who loves the series) I don't think it's anything to be embarrassed about. People dislike things for all kinds of reasons, sometimes no reason at all and you don't have to justify yourself to anyone.

I'm struggling with it too for the same reasons. But I'm sticking with it because I need to know what's going on.

Didn't read the book series as a kid, but I do hope they at least get a happy ending.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Low tolerance for children in distress is a survival trait for the human race. (It also helps you avoid being a shitty person in a variety of situations.) NEVER apologize for this. You should not be embarrassed about feeling that way even related to fictional characters, nor it is something you have to try to "overcome" so you can enjoy a show that other people like.

(As for me, I loved the books when I was younger, but I'm just not interested in seeing another adaptation. The movie was cringey, and I'm just not interested in trying another adaptation...although I probably would have been when I was younger.)

lentils: I wouldn't be worth much if I couldn't feel (Default)

Oh I can definitely see that. It's one of the reasons I can't do Stranger Things. ASOUE I grew up on so I know basically what happens, so it's NBD for me I guess, but I can definitely see how it would be upsetting to come into as an adult.

Also, as a kid I had a terrifically dark sense of humor (I also grew up on Addams Family reruns and the original, rather bleak Peanuts comics) so I found these great. Now, I think the appeal for a lot of kids is that the series doesn't sugarcoat childhood and really looks at what it's like to be powerless as a child. And yet, somehow, these kids survive and carry on. I can see how that's a comforting message.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I noped out of the books years ago for similar reasons. Once I realized the wry style and tongue-in-cheek warnings were actually dead serious about the unrelenting bleakness, I decided I to go read something else with catharsis/resolution along with the misery. I'm glad for people who like bleakness to have it, but if it doesn't make you happy, don't waste your time on it!
