Drinking (or lack thereof)

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Am I the only one (over 21) who doesn't drink much for non-religious reasons? I just don't often like the taste of most alcohol. And while sometimes it feels good when I do drink and am a little buzzed, other times it actually makes me feel anxious and jittery.

Definitely not. I'm not much of a drinker, either. I don't mind what little alcohol I have had, it's just not my regular beverage of choice. If it isn't your thing, that's totally fine.

I don't like the taste of alcohol either. It kind of sucks because I do want to get drunk sometime and see what it's like, but I have yet to find an alcohol I can stand long enough to get there.

Nope. I don't drink very often. I do sometimes, but only every once in a while.

Nah dude, there are quite a few people out there who don't drink. Me being one of them. Not due to negative reactions like you sometimes have, but just because I don't want to. I had my summer of debauchery and drunkeness and that seems to have been enough. I'm not against it, I just don't care.

I'm nearly thirty and I don't drink. Beer hurts my stomach and I hate the bitter taste of alcoholic beverages.

I don't really drink alcohol either (an occasional glass of wine with dinner, or one drink/cocktail per year at some gathering). It doesn't taste that good and just makes me feel tired and easily irritated.

I don't really drink. I've only felt buzzed once about 15 years ago, and it took quite a bit, and it really just seems like a waste of money and carbs that I would mu h rather apply to other things.

Nah I'm in the same boat, you just figure out what works for you. Get comfortable saying "no thanks" without being self conscious, but also (if you don't have objections on principle/for health reasons) try and scope out what you like okay for those situations where it makes more sense to drink socially, so you don't have to stress about the decision in the moment.

I like drinking but there's nothing wrong or weird about it. A huge number of people don't like to drink (and an almost wearisome amount of them post here).

You're not even close to the only one. We just have a weird drinking culture in the US. It seems like we drink more than we do, in fact, because of the way we play it up in certain ways. PLENTY of people don't drink just because it doesn't appeal to them. (I'm assuming you're in the US bc you mention being "over 21.")

Nope. I also don't drink because I dislike the taste of alcohol. I'm fine with using wine or sherry in cooking, though.

Nah, I drink maybe once a year, and that's usually because it's Christmas or my birthday. Otherwise I don't because I don't really enjoy it and most alcoholic drinks taste nasty to me.

Nope. I'm a teetotaler, have been basically my whole life. I've drunk different alcohol at different times, and it all tastes like shite. I don't see the point, it's expensive, and i hate being around drunks, so....

My whole family on my mom's side is (or was, all but my mom and one of her brothers are dead and my mom's headed that way) alcoholics, so I don't drink because end stage alcoholism (as in, when you give yourself brain damage and your organs start shutting down) is horrific.

I don't drink for medical reasons. I've not met anyone over the age of 25 who gave a shit.

I didn't drink alcohol for years after I turned 21 because I didn't like the taste of most of it. Now I enjoy wine, beer, and the occasional Irish coffee, but that's about it. I can't drink like straight whiskey or anything still, tastes like ass to me. Lots of people don't drink, but I think one just doesn't hear about it much.

I don't think anyone genuinely likes the taste of alcohol when they first start drinking. It's one of those things that is very much an acquired taste.

I know plenty of people who don't like either the taste of alcohol or the feeling of being drunk, or both.

More for me! :D

Nah, I don't particularly drink unless it's birthdays or special occasions, and even then I just chug a beer (with lemon and salt) or something.

Re: Drinking (or lack thereof)

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, that was me for most of my 20s. Only reason I changed my stance was I found stuff that agreed with me/I liked. But I still completely get why someone wouldn't want to. Some of it I still think is nasty, some of it still doesn't make me feel good.

No. :) I'm not a major fan of alcohol either; I drink very little each year.
