Best volunteer opportunities

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
So I recently moved to a new city and I have no social circle. I want to meet people, but I'm terrified to go to a bar or club alone (is that even okay to do, or does it seem desperate?). I enrolled in one evening language class, which I love, but so far none of my classmates have been the social type. At least it helps me develop a skill and gives me something fun to do besides sit in my apartment and watch netflix!

I don't think I can afford another class, but I always enjoyed volunteering. I live in a big city now and I'm pretty sure virtually any opportunity exists. But I don't know how to find volunteering opportunities, let alone fun/social ones. Does anyone volunteer, and what's a good way to meet people through it while also contributing to a good cause?

My first thought was volunteering at a shelter to play with cats or something, but when I've done that before, it was all solo. granted, if it's cats I'm cool with that but still, I probably need human interaction..

Shelter volunteering sounds cool! You might also look around for local history stuff, if that sounds interesting to you--a local museum or cemetery or sth. I think those kinds of groups are almost entirely volunteer-run, and they tend to attract really interesting people.

Typing in "food pantry + [your city name]" ought to bring up websites for local charities, which should have a volunteer section.

Figure out what things you care the most about, and then find organizations that do that. I volunteer both at shelters and at a legal organization that works with immigrants.

With shelter stuff, at least the shelter I'm volunteering at, there are almost always people visiting to look for a pet, so there are often others who want to look at the cats.

Are you religious? I only ask because a lot of churches will run volunteer activities and sponsor a lot of different opportunities for volunteers. If you're not religious, still check out the local churches to see what they sponsor. Perhaps they sponsor a food kitchen that you could help volunteer with. Or look for the senior center and see if they need any help too. Good luck!

It honestly depends on the city, but I'd say animal shelters would be great. The people who volunteer there obviously (or should) love animals, so you would hope to find people who are nice to speak with. It still depends on what time of day you go (maybe everyone stops in in the mornings?) and what the shelter itself is like (no-kill, friendly-looking shelters would be better than one that gives off sad vibes), but once you can find a good one, stick with it for a bit. Maybe new people will come in who are looking at doing the same thing you are.

I volunteer at a public library, stuff like helping at their book sales and putting Summer Reading prize packs together.

I've been living in my "new" city for a decade and I'm still trying to figure this out (I travel so much and so irregularly for work that "Take a class" and "Get a regular volunteer gig!" aren't very good options). I've had some luck with work friendships, so you might try to foster some social connections with your co-workers (or classmates, or whatever you have).
