man it totally is the norm. you may think its just a few loud people in each fandom, but when you've got a bunch of people telling you they're experiencing it in multiple fandoms, you have to admit it's a phenomenon and not random isolated incidents. i hang with a lot of artists/writers who are in a lot of different fandoms respectively, and we all experience this in form or another.

This. If it isn't pedo accusations, it'll be some other accusation that makes the shippers of the wrong pairings out to be Bad People. It'll be racism or misogyny or promoting abusive relationships, whatever the bullies think will work to keep other fans in line.

The notion that what people ship or don't ship says things about their personal moral character has become a very pervasive one.
