Listen, I still really have a lot of positive feelings about Transmetropolitan, but I'm going to lay it on the line here: Spider Jerusalem is not a good or interesting character. Just take Hunter S Thompson and add some nerd wish fulfillment and fantasy and you've got Spider Jerusalem. Weak as fuck. Anyone could play him.

I dunno, I like him, but that might be cause I'm a failed journalist and tbh a lot of writers like navelstaring about being a writer.

I get why he'd be likable but, one, I definitely think he's not a dramatically interesting character. Two, just for me, the likability has kind of faded away over time and it hasn't much left behind.

tbh I have not read everything, so I might get sick of it yet.

I found him interesting because he was at least a different kind of nerd wish fulfillment and fantasy than usual.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-01 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, but like, how far does that go? Especially now, 15 years after the series has ended?

(Anonymous) 2017-02-01 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
How far does what go? I don't suddenly find him uninteresting because it's 15 years later, because he's still a different kind of wish fulfillment than most of the stuff out there. Has there been some kind of influx lately of Hunter S. Thompson characters that has swamped the field? I hadn't noticed if there has been.

That's part of the appeal, tho? Take HST, dump him in a futuristic dystopia to get him rolling, and sit back for the ride.

don't dis Hunter, he was awesome as shit.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-02 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Hunter was cool but that doesn't mean expys of Hunter are cool

Also, I think Spider is based more on the reductive caricature of HST that a lot of fan boys embrace than on the more complex reality
