I found him interesting because he was at least a different kind of nerd wish fulfillment and fantasy than usual.

Sure, but like, how far does that go? Especially now, 15 years after the series has ended?

How far does what go? I don't suddenly find him uninteresting because it's 15 years later, because he's still a different kind of wish fulfillment than most of the stuff out there. Has there been some kind of influx lately of Hunter S. Thompson characters that has swamped the field? I hadn't noticed if there has been.
