People talk as if accidental exposure to a meh fic is a huge imposition rather than a minor and inevitable inconvenience.

I feel like people have come to talk about experiences in general this way.

Have they? If so, I'd like to know their secret because I think my life is pretty good but I haven't been able to avoid the occasional crap novel, crap TV show (or episode), mediocre meal, unexpectedly bad traffic, etc. etc. I'm baffled as to how people manage to avoid disappointing experiences that waste their time.

That's the thing -- they can't avoid it, and they seem to actively resent that fact.
