I saw something the other day where JK Rowling acknowledged that this was a huge plot hole and she should have gotten rid of the map at the end of PoA (which would have been easy). But she liked the idea of Harry using the map to watch Ginny while they were apart so much she kept it.

Huh. This may be the only interview-comment of Rowling's that I actually like, and it sort of makes me forgive the plot hole a little bit. It is a cute thing (even if the Harry/Ginny overall wasn't executed the best).
