So.... basically what you're saying is gay characters are gay-only because they say they're gay, and unless a straight person says they're straight-only, then they can also have gay relationships. The fluidity of sexuality only applies to straight people; gay people are only 100% gay forever. Is that about right? Because if so, I have a couple of issues with it.

No. I'm saying that someone comparing turning an out gay character straight to turning an implied heterosexual character gay is not the same, for the reason that one has been outright said and the other has just been assumed to be straight.

It's the idea that "well, Character X has not said that s/he likes the same sex, so it's impossible for him/her to be in a same-sex relationship" that I believe is wrong (whereas "Character X has said s/he is not interested in the opposite sex / would never be in an heterosexual relationship," whether or not you think sexuality is fluid, is a more valid argument). It's not that sexuality is fluid only for one group, it's that the sexuality is assumed.

All right, so it's the characters that have not implicitly stated their sexual orientation one way or another that are "up for grabs", so to speak, and the ones who have are (or should be) off-limits.

Because I see a lot of fandom contradicting that; I see phrases like "oh he's just overcompensating", or "he's in denial" about a character implicitly or explicitly demonstrating their preference for the opposite sex, in essence because they prefer him paired with another male character. The instances I was thinking of when I made the secret were largely male characters who were attracted to/dated/slept with women, and showed no interest in doing so with men. That was my issue with the OOC comment. I know not all yaoi/slash fans do this, but I seem to see more that do than don't.

Yes, that was basically what I was saying. :)

I think an argument about an explicitly straight character "overcompensating" could be made -- depending on the character -- but it would be open to a lot more valid debate and criticism. That I don't take any issue with.
