Agreed. For me, even once I took off the shipping goggles, the series was at its best when L and Light were hanging around trying to outsmart each other. And Mello and Near just aren't very well developed.

It was a nice idea to have people training to be L's successors, but they never did become anything beyond that. Near was just a pale copy of L and Mello was an over-the-top criminal. And like you said, it felt like L and were trying to outsmart each other, whereas Light and Near were just flinging stuff at each other.

Their entire point was "look we can be just like L" and like you said, that was it. It was like we traded actual development for "oh look they have funny quirks!". And once Mikami and Takada came in there were just too many characters around, pulling focus from Light and never getting any real personality. I agree about the flinging. It basically felt like "well if we throw enough stuff at the wall, eventually something will stick."

nayrt but I agree completely. We get it, L was quirky, and that made him interesting because we didn't expect him. It felt really cheap how Mello and Near were such cheap imitations of him, each with some of his quirks. It just wasn't effective. They were both pretty obnoxious. Mello at least had enough self-respect to die, but Near was just an annoying little shit to the end.
