Yeah, the Near and Mello stuff was noticeably lower quality than the first half (two-thirds? whatever) of the series. They just didn't successfully live up to L. Near was especially boring, there wasn't really anything likeable about him. I think Light remained the star of the show throughout - not just in being the protagonist, but he remained by far the most interesting character to watch - but I shared Light's concern that things weren't interesting enough without a worthy antagonist. :-/

L had a good death scene, I liked that it was so unexpected, but the series couldn't live up to it after that. Part of it might've been that everything got super OP after the time jump. It stopped being small-scale intellect that seemed to take place in a world that everyone could relate to, and started being airplanes and missiles and secret genius orphanages. It was interesting to see what the world with Kira looked like five years later (with crime dropping, etc) but if it were up to me, I'd definitely have eliminated the genius orphanage concept and brought a new antagonist that wasn't trying so hard to be a quirky L successor.
