I still think that Light is one of the best written characters of any anime, and that Light and L are among the best written rivals. Their brain-duelling - and yes, I'm going to go ahead and say the intensely intimate factor to their relationship, sexual or not (though I'm convinced there was some intentional sexual suggestion) - was absolutely fantastic.

The show probably is the most successful if you watch it when you're around Light's age, but I do think it deserves its accolades, at least through the point until L dies. The second arc wasn't as good, but it did have some interesting points, and the series concluded well. (I like endings that are stated from the start, in this case, Ryuk saying he's going to write Light's name, and then he does. Solid, full circle.) Plus, it was a contained story without filler, which is something I always appreciate in an anime.
