Anime-related pet peeves

Whether related to anime itself, or anime fandoms

When people say BL/yaoi is just about "girly looking men". Sure, there are some feminine-looking ukes, but it seems to me that there are plenty of masculine tops and bottoms both that definitely could not be mistaken for women. Ai no Kusabi comes to mind, Rikki is extremely masculine looking. Also, Mirage of Blaze, another heavy plot BL title, definitely has masculine-looking guys.

I am beyond sick of pantyshots in series that are not otherwise particularly sexual. And the bouncing boob animation. I will drop most shows that have these.

I won't drop out if I otherwise like the plot, but jiggling boobs and unecessary panty shots seriously annoy me, too. It's like animators have no idea how boobs work. It's even worse than a sexy costume, because it is the female character's very body. Ugh.

See, it's not that they don't *know* how the female body works, it's that they don't *care* how it works. Which in a way is more annoying to me.
I guess part of the reason I can be so quick to drop stuff is that my time and attention is limited these days.

Every protaganist is a fifteen year old middle schooler. Saving the world? Middle School. Time travel? Middle school. Falling in love? Middle school. Leader of the rebellion? Middle School. Hunger Games Before The Hunger Games? Middle school.

It would be nice to see young teens acting their age and maybe older teens being the ones involved in the darker stuff, but at this point I'd be happy if they were literally any age but fifteen, why is it always fifteen?

Not only that, they all have the exact same seat in their school classrooms! Second to the back row, right next to the window. :D

Don't forget, the boys are almost failing average joes with two best friends who are comic relief guys and a crush on a girl who they percieve to be out of their league, who totally obviously likes them. If the protaganist is a girl, they will be shy and clumsy, often with a best girl friend and a creepy guy 'friend' who has an inappropriate crush on them, though that's not as all-encompassing as the clumsy shy girl who eventually comes out of her shell via plot-as-metaphor-for-coming-of-age.

Yes, thank you. It drives me crazy!
That's part of the reason that for a while I was super satisfied by SNK, especially in the manga - there were a whole lot of chapters where you got to see the adults doing cool stuff. It was mindblowing.

Adults? There are no adults in anime!

Same here. It was so nice to have a story about an army and humanity's fight against something that wasn't ONLY about a 15-year-old boy.

Of course, Isayama completely ruined it, but whatever.

I think it's actually pretty amazing just how dramatically Isayama is managing to fuck up SNK. Like, it shouldn't have been that difficult to give it a reasonable ending... I honestly doubt they're going to animate the entire thing, because who wants to air that clusterfuck?
I especially love talking to people who watched the first season and never read the manga, and are enthusiastic about it. And I just shake my head sadly and go, you have no idea just how much bullshit lies ahead...

Yeah there was a period where I dropped anime for a while only because I was sick of teenager protagonists all the time.

It doesn't even seem to matter what genre or age group the show is targeted at either which is weird.

Yep! Everything from shows aimed at kids to dark adult series features those same 15 year olds, and it's bizarre.

Re: Anime-related pet peeves

nayrt but I actually think adult anime usually features adults. There's a lot of darker anime with teen protagonists, but I would argue, most of the time in those cases, the primary target audience is still teens. There's plenty of anime with actual adult protagonists, at least with characters in the 20-30 age range, but yeah, the industry is dominated by teen protagonists (but probably for a reason).

Bouncing boobs and huge boobs contained by teensy bras. It looks so uncomfortable.

I'm watching the new season of Ao no Exorcist and Shura's design drives me up the walls :| it's such bullshit. If she wore the same stuff and a sports bra instead of that thing I'd already be slightly more okay with it! ughhhhh

-Female voice actors voicing child characters, especially boys. Some of them can pull it off, but I would much rather an actual boy be cast. I think Japan ends to cast women more often, because I notice more and more that in English dubs, actual guys play roles originally played by women, which I definitely appreciate. It's bad enough for teen characters, but for characters that are supposed to be younger? I get child actors can be hard to work with, but I've never heard an adult pull off a convincing child voice. I'm thinking how much better the original Fullmetal Alchemist English dub was compared to the Japanese one, even though the Alphonse actor was no acting genius, he still sounded way more genuine and cuter.

-Boring, unanimated OPs. I know it's a budget thing, but I hate watching an OP that is just a bunch of stills, or character portraits with their hair blowing in the wind. I'd rather watch something artistic and dynamic that represents the show.

-Female characters constantly wearing short skirts, even in battle. Like, every female "knight" type warrior wears a miniskirts. I get it, seifuku are kawaii, but c'mon, time and a place.

-Maybe this is just a Japanese thing, but I hate when two characters are having a dramatic scene, and the one is just confused and doesn't know what to say so they just say the other's name multiple times. Like you're waiting for them to break out an actual line, but they just say the name, again, and again.

-When teenage characters are depicted as half the height of adults. Like, a fifteen year old boy could very well be as tall as an average adult, or even taller. They shouldn't go up to your stomach.

-When voice actors make "eating noises". Like, who is constantly grunting when they eat? That's not a thing!

I disagree with your first point but I tend to find overall female voice actors tend to be better at voicing young boys then say... a male voice actor would be. Women in general (not always) have higher voices so it's less of a stretch for them to go young then for a man who has a very deep voice. Both japanese animation and western animation have some amazing voice actresses doing a great job voicing boy characters.

I do agree ideally a boy the same age as the character is best, but there's tons of complications with that. One is the hours and general complications that come with hiring a kid actor. Add the fact that if you're doing a long series, a kid actor is not ideal because they will inevitably age out of the role. Plus english dubs may really just not have the resources/money to be able to hire kid actors on a regular basis.

I also like the FMA original cast more then the dub, but I'm picky about the acting being good above all else.

Re: Anime-related pet peeves

(Anonymous) 2017-02-06 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
It's not the vocal range, it's just the way of talking. There are very few female voice actors who actually sound the way a prepubescent boy sounds, just in actual style of speech. It's jarring to me because it still sounds so obviously like an adult woman. As for teen characters, there's no reason they need such high voices at all. For example, in Attack on Titan, everyone had a fit when Armin was voiced by a guy and had a voice that was actually age appropriate. In Japan, the smaller guys, even if they are well into their teens, still always get female VAs.

I know there are complications with using real kids, but at least a teenage actor would sound a lot more natural than an adult in these roles. I actually found the acting to be better in the English dub of FMA, including Alphonse, just because he sounded so much more genuine and way cuter, being an actual kid. But to each their own!

The way characters pause dramatically before saying someone's name when they're addressing them.

That squeaky leathery sound that always happens when a someone clenches their fist.

Tsundere. If I could wipe one type of character out of fictional existence, it would be this one.

I never actively noticed the squeaky leather fist sound, but I knew immediately what you were talking about and will probably never un-hear it. So, thanks for that. :P

- Female characters only reason to be around is being the MCs love interest and never having a story of their own/motivations outside the MC. I know this mostly happens in shonen, though, and I don't expect the trend to die any sooner but it has always been a personal peeve of mine. Specially growing up and watching this cool guys doing cool things while the girls where all being left behind sighing for them.

Or when they are given their own story at first but it gets dropped for them to focus entirely on the MC.

Oh God I hate that too.

"Here's a female character with an interesting story/powers/goals/etc... haha just kidding she just orbits around the MC"
