I don't get watching sports. I understand liking a sport and playing it, but just sitting there and watching? Nope. Don't get it.

i think part of the reason is beer and nostalgia. the other part is gambling.

I dunno, why do you find anything interesting to watch?

Same.

Same. Some I find tolerable to watch at best, but they are honestly super boring to me. Playing I did and always got, but it's different when you're actually involved.

If I'm going to sit down and watch something, give me something with a plot and let me escape reality for a while.

I'm not saying there's any reason you ought to enjoy sports, but sports definitely have a narrative.

It's not necessarily a 'plot', in the sense that it's not pre-determined, but there's plenty of narrative and honestly plenty of escapism as well.

Re: Things you don't get the point of

I can see how it's escapism but it's not my type of escapism is probably how I should have phrased it.

I need characters, I need plot, and I also don't tend to do anything that has to do with reality, I want a constructed plot (especially because I want to know if say, someone is injured, it's not real because if it is real that kills my escapism.)

Toxic masculinity.

And women's sports?

When women's sports gets the kind of attention and (taxpayer) money that pro football et al. do then we'll talk.

Amen!

Re: Things you don't get the point of

(Anonymous) 2017-02-06 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
The question wasn't, "why do football stadiums get taxpayer funding". It was, "why do people watch sports". And while they're not as popular as football, people do demonstrably watch womens' sports. toxic masculinity is definitely a thing but I just don't think it's the whole thing with sports.

This is true, but when was the last time women's sports has ever been a thing outside of daytime cable when nobody's watching?

Re: Things you don't get the point of

(Anonymous) 2017-02-06 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
the women's world cup is very popular.

but honestly literally all I'm saying is that there are reasons that people like watching sports besides toxic masculinity, not that you have to like sports or that they're not flawed or anything like that

No, I get what you're saying and I agree. I just think toxic masculinity is the driving factor, if not the only factor.

Re: Things you don't get the point of

(Anonymous) 2017-02-06 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, if you wanted to say that toxic masculinity was the driving force of mainstream sports fandom, I'd probably agree with that. To me, that's different from it being the driving force of sports - maybe that's a distinction without a difference.

That latter bit is definitely how I see it, yeah. You can't have sports culture without sports and I dislike both.

Re: Things you don't get the point of

(Anonymous) 2017-02-06 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I strongly disagree - I don't think the problem is really with sports themselves at all, but with that mainstream sports culture, and also with our culture generally, our American culture or whatever other culture. But, you know, fair enough.

Re: Things you don't get the point of

(Anonymous) 2017-02-06 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Going with friends to watch a game in person can be fun, depending on the sport (I'm okay with baseball, ice hockey, and basketball, but American football bores me to tears and I don't understand the rules). Only as an occasional thing and it's more about hanging out with friends and the whole ritual of getting a hot dog or whatever than it is about the game.

Watching on TV I don't get at all. The only time I've ever sat through a whole game on TV was when the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004, after an 86-year drought, and that was because I was dating a guy from Boston at the time.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-06 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Same, and as someone who never even had much attention for PLAYING sports, it's baffling to me. Literally, if it's on TV, my eyes will drift to the wall. I absolutely cannot pay attention to it. In fact, I find it kind of an obnoxious buzz in my ears, I don't like being in the same room as sports on TV.

I agree, though I do make an exception for Olympic gymnastics. Those mesmerize me.
