The artist worked on Bakuman (the manga artist one you mentioned) after Death Note, but I would suggest checking out the series he illustrated before Death Note, Hikaru no Go, which I probably prefer over either of Obata's other two series, personally.

OH SHIT I forgot he did that! I love Hikaru no Go! I didn't read much of the manga, but the anime's art was lovely.

NAYRT I recently invested in the entire series on these gorgeous bluray discs. Cost a pretty yenny, but it was well worth it. Easily one of my favorite series of all times. I make a point to rewatch it at least once a year.
