That's not my takeaway ship, but as someone who also pretty much only ships yaoi (and occasional yuri), Ouran had great het ships. I think the fact that Haruhi (that was her name, right?) so clearly didn't care about gender and was totally cool presenting as a guy helped eliminate for me the weird gender roles that are present in most het ships.

I think this is really true! And not just Haruhi, but there's also an element of presentation and posture and stuff that's present with the male characters that eliminates a lot of that stuff as well.

Also, Haruhi is really adorable

That's what kind of pissed me off about the anime, though. For all that she was pretty chill about gender, the anime, especially the end, seemed to keep pushing her into traditionally feminine roles, and undercut her independence.
I loved the series until I wrote a paper on it... and that kind of ruined it for me :X

I'm sure most people wouldn't mind having to present as another gender if they had the debt Haruhi had, and Kyoya was never gonna let that go. But clearly Haruhi wore what she liked and didn't care too much how she presented anyway.

...She was already chill with presenting as another gender, though. Like, it only came up because everyone figured it out afterward because they thought she was a guy to begin with.

Go read that second sentence again.
