I'm not sure why we're so obsessed with the Tudors (or at least Henry VIII and Elizabeth - it's not as if Henry VII gets much attention). I'm sure someone's written a paper on it somewhere.

Henry VIII basically invented the media friendly version of the monarchy we see today. He was all about the PR and Pomp and Ceremony. Elizabeth One basically invented the Little Englander Isolationist Narrative that gets replayed every few decades up to the current one. Basically England is stuck spinning their wheels around those two and Hollywood is stuck around England's view of the monarchy.

Well, there's the fact that Hwnry VIII is responsible for England's break with the Roman Catholic church, which is kind of a big deal. Then there's the whole six wives where two of them were beheaded thing, which is bound to attract attention.

As for Elizabeth, it was a big deal to have a successful English queen - the last attempt where a woman tried to rule all of England landed the country in years of ugly civil war. Her reign was also significant culturally and a time of relative peace and prosperity after so much chaos.

Peace and Prosperity? She went to war with half the world.

I said RELATIVE peace and prosperity. Compared to the Wars of the Roses, then breaking with the Church, beheading crowned quuens, burning heretics of various flavors, the 9 days queen and Bloody Mary, not to mention that ongoing wars were a Thing prior to Elizabeth I's reign, she probably looked pretty good in comparison.

Before Elizabeth I, England wasn't exactly besties with the rest of the world, you know.

Oh prior to her it was just the regular ups and downs of the usual dynastic affairs. After her if the rest of Europe said fire was hot then the English would rush to embrace the cooling powers of the flame.

Both her dad and her sister put in a lot of work to try and get England back on the ins with the rest of Europe and make that international pariah following the reformation thing a temporary situation. And it was kinda working too. It was Elizabeth who decided to go full fuck it mode, and set the tone for England's relationship with Europe ever since. If I could kill any single British Monarch then it would be a toss up between her and Edward I, that is how bad she is.

I'm not saying that those two shouldn't have attention - They're interesting, obviously, but there are other monarchs that have also reigned in times of national upheaval, like Richard II (deposed) or Charles I (head cut off). And it's not as if most of the adaptations take the reasons for the break with the church seriously (with the exception of Wolf Hall) they just seem to blame him wanting to get a divorce. Plus the UK is mostly secular in nature now, so you'd think they'd branch out a bit.

I think people love to think, talk, and speculate about Anne Boleyn. I wish Catherine of Aragon got more attention, though not that I don't think Anne deserves all the mythology around her but still. Catherine was a thoroughly impressive and strong woman who fought like a motherfucker for herself and her daughter. I'd like a movie focusing on the earlier parts of her life, because she was a lot more than Henry's first wife. I just rhymed.
