Is it possible..

(Anonymous) 2017-02-18 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
for a binge eating problem to manifest in drinking soda? I used to binge eat in high school and after high school. Now I no longer have the budget to eat that way but I still know the underlying problem is there and I feel like it's shown itself in drinking sodas (and coffees).

I think it's definitely possible--and, as with most mental illness-type issues, the fact that it's bothering you and feels like a problem to you is a good indicator that there's something there.

I know I have had a weight problem for a while and I used to eat til I felt sick when i had the money for it. And now I drink soda til I get that sick feeling and I know that's not healthy.

I think it all comes down to I like the effect the food has on me and the effect caffeine has on my mind. It gives me that 'hypomanic' feeling I crave and keeps me out of that state where I feel bored by everything and life itself and nothing seems fun.

Short answer: yes.

And it's not a benign problem, either. Excessive sugar and caffiene intake will eventually lead to extremely poor health, even if you do manage to avoid weight gain.

I think the problem is that the root of it is tied to an issue I can't really fix. Bipolar mood swings. Medicine is incredibly expensive and tends to go overboard in addressing the issue.

I could probably try exercising more and finding something healthier to bump me out of that "feeling dead" zone.

Thank you for your response.

Not that I doubt your own ability to understand your mental health needs, but the range of services and pharmaceuticals available these days is much, much different to what it was even ten years ago.

I understand if the expense is too great, but if you ever do get access to resources I'd recommend giving it a second chance. Even having a supply of an emergency med to act as a back-up can go a long way to helping you maintain a sense of control in the long term.

All the best, anon.

da

How much would you say was 'excessive'?

yes, I think so. One was with food, this is with soda, but in both cases you're binging on something and finding it hard to stop (I'm presuming).

Switch to club soda or seltzer water!
