Wait, what? I don't know what parentheses are, but I do call (these) brackets. The dictionary definition of brackets seem to be any of () [] {} etc. but most people I know who say brackets mean the round ones.

Well that answers my question. I was wondering what brackets are called in British English if parentheses are called brackets. I don't like it though. Seems much more useful to have different terms for parentheses (), brackets [], and braces {}.

I have never heard the term "braces" for {}. TIL! (I do use parentheses and brackets respectively for the other two tho. And I assume if they are all brackets in the UK, there must be some way of distinguishing the three from a technical standpoint and I wonder what those terms are.)

Brackets and square brackets. And I guess I would call braces "those wiggly brackets I can never draw, you know the ones, with the awkward wiggle".

bahaha that is so accurate

I've always called braces "fancy parentheses." I didn't know there was a name for them until just now, but they come up so rarely in my life.

They are indeed fancy! I don't think I've ever seen them used outside of like, programming.

I'm a programmer and work with UK engineers and we use parens, brackets, and curly braces.

Of course, a writer is not an engineer...

I'm really curious now what US programmers call them. One of my friends is one so I will have to ask her!

I call them parentheses, brackets, and curly brackets.

I'm US and I've done some programming, but that may not hold everywhere in the US.
