I'm stuck on purse vs handbag

I feel like "handbag" was the preferred American term for a long time. At least, that's the impression I've gotten from watching a lot of old movies. Even a little clutch purse would be referred to as a handbag. I probably hear "purse" most often (here in the US) but I think that's a modern thing and no one would be confused by "handbag."

American who lived in the UK here - "handbag" to me always sounded like a larger purse, while anything that holds your shit is a purse, unless it's enormous and is just a bag. At any rate, handbag certainly doesn't sound wrong, but most people will just say purse.

So it was a little bit of a linguistic culture shock in the UK to be told my purse wasn't a purse, it was a handbag, and purse referred to like... wallets.

Those really describe two different things to this American. A purse is what you carry your wallet and stuff in, and a handbag is usually more decorative, like a clutch.

I wonder where pocketbook falls. (Yeah, it's weird since most people would probably assume it was a pocket sized book instead of a purse, but it's what I most often hear)
