I mean I usually refer to the specific med too, but if I'm speaking in general terms, I tend to say painkiller. But yeah I think you're probably right.

It being on the bottle doesn't make it common vernacular though (and I just haven't really heard "pain reliever" in common conversation even in fiction taking place in other parts of the US).
