Thinking about it, there are some recurring themes. Not every one will pop up in every fandom, but I tend to be attracted to stories that have the elements in it.

Former friends/lovers, now rivals/enemies, but they still can't shake the connection between them. (So. Much. Smutty. Fic.)

A character who, despite being awesome, doesn't feel like they're deserving of happiness. (Fanfictionally, could go into either angstfests or fluff where people shower them with love and affection.)

(That character sometimes overlaps with the Iron Woobie/Stoic Woobie fetish that pops up from time to time.)
