Break it down to the bones

(Anonymous) 2017-02-21 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by a comment thread from last week: For fanfic writers, what are your stories really about once you wash away all the fandom dressings? Pick some of your favorite stories and summarize them in a basic sentence. Try not to reveal your fandom.

Points to commenters who can guess your fandom. Bonus points to commenters who guess your fic.

Kinky sex mixed with a heavy dose of characterization about a bossy switch who needs to please and be admired but also needs to command and get everything he wants because he believes he's perfect.

I'm going to go ahead and assume this is LOTR but that's just because I know that's your fandom

1. An angry young man betrays his family, leaving them physically and emotionally broken.

2. A former bully will do anything for the daughter who's given up on her dreams and the grandson who's making all the wrong choices.

3. A father comes face to face with his son's demons.

4. Parents realize their estranged son is actually kind of a hero.

So...apparently I'm all about family drama.

- A boy trying to get home, reconcile with his past, and finally be able to move forward into a productive future (and maybe unfuck his issues a bit on the way and have some positive relationships with people).
(ha, just realized this describes at least two of my fics)

- Learning to let go of unattainable goals and a desire for revenge that are blinding him to happiness he could already be having.

- A thief playing "BDSM Chicken" with a soldier and ends up accidentally causing tons of mayhem and also joining the army.

- The whole amnesia thing was a red herring; everybody's actually dead.

Oh! I like this game!

* Friends drawn closer by circumstances take the plunge into romance.

* A family's bond is put to the test when one of their own falls.

* Male friends with benefits have a major falling out before realizing just how much they mean to each other. One of them comes to terms with new facets of his sexuality.

* Gender identity issues bring strife to a married couple, but it works out.

* A father realizes the depths of his black-sheep son's despair.

Not stories I've written but just going through my bookmarks. Also: I apparently really like stories where good people fall in love accidentally or unexpectedly and overcome their issues together. Like... I just want to read about people falling in love and being good for each other. God what a sap. Anyway.

Fandom One
-Person A and Person B have to pretend to be married and deal with the fact that they've fallen in love without realizing it
-Person A makes an unconventional marriage proposal to Person B for non-romantic companionship but actually they've fallen in love

Fandom Two
-Person A sees Person B exercising and is driven mad with lust by their body and they fuck
-Person A and Person B slowly fall into an actual, functional relationship without meaning to, and are unexpectedly happy with it
-Person B pretends to hate and be annoyed with Person A while actually they slowly circle around each other falling in love (actually I have about 5 stories bookmarked that fit into this category with this ship)

Fandom Three
-Person A and Person B are clearly into each other and trying to work out a functional loving romantic relationship despite their individual issues and insecurities

Person A is abused/mistreated/ignored and Person B finally notices and gives Person A all the love and attention. Bonus, everyone involved finally notices how sad Person A's life has been and they all feel guilty and Do Better from then on.

Basic theme of Person A Deserves (and gets) Nice Things.

1. Two men (or a man and a woman) work in an office together.

2. They share initmate detail about their personal lives.

3. They develop a (often tenuous) connection.

4. Sex.

Thinking about it, there are some recurring themes. Not every one will pop up in every fandom, but I tend to be attracted to stories that have the elements in it.

Former friends/lovers, now rivals/enemies, but they still can't shake the connection between them. (So. Much. Smutty. Fic.)

A character who, despite being awesome, doesn't feel like they're deserving of happiness. (Fanfictionally, could go into either angstfests or fluff where people shower them with love and affection.)

(That character sometimes overlaps with the Iron Woobie/Stoic Woobie fetish that pops up from time to time.)

Two men silently pining while assuming the other is too taken/out of their league/straight/good to ever be interested in them romantically.

My needs are simple. All the plot that happens is just a diversion for pining.

Generally it's "stock idea/AU/etc... but with a TWIST!"

Like, a soulmate AU where the endgame pairing isn't actually soulmates. Or, a fairytale AU where the leads end up going their separate ways instead of getting the fairytale happily ever after ending.
