Small talk? Like... I don't know where I was supposed to learn that lesson or whether my personality type is predisposed to not being able to hold a conversation unless it has inherent value/a real topic.

I hate small talk too. Which is why social media drives me nuts most of the time. (And I hate that LJ is going that way. I don't care that you bought food for your cat. I want to know if you think there might be life on the new planets NASA just found.)

But that could be small talk, with the right people. Part of learning the art of making casual conversation is tailoring it to the person you're talking to, though.

I love small talk. You see a lot of people harsh on it online, but it's such an amazing thing. I don't want to have deep serious discussions with clients or coworkers or strangers. Sometimes I just want to talk about the weather or Did you hear about X? or just chat about whatever with another human being. It's all about making a connection.

If you actually want to work on it, it can be done and just takes time and thoughtfulness. It's about paying attention to the other person. There are probably a million and one online guides if you want.
