Well, I always thought of Moran as a parallel foil to Watson, and that doesn't mean he shouldn't be smart. Kinda disappointed to hear if his characterization isn't that good.

Ritchie verse may be a tad ridiculous but in some ways it's a genuinely decent adaptation IMO.

I think there's more good than bad about the Ritchie verse (at least the first one). I honestly think Jude Law's Watson is one of the best portrayals of the character ever, only second to Edward Hardwicke.

The Ritchie version of Sherlock Holmes is a fun popcorn movie and they do an excellent job with Jude Law and Watson. It's RDJ playing a version of himself that happens to be named Sherlock Holmes that's disappointing, IMO.

I loved the Moriarty/Moran duo in GoS. They were wonderfully in sync and Moran was obviously superb at what he was--an assassin and Moriarty's right hand. And his concern when Moriarty might've been killed was touching.

I also enjoyed the face-off b/w Moran and Watson, when Watson basically pulled the curtain off the big gun. And then later, of course, when Watson and Holmes prove their own synchronicity in temporarily taking Moran down.

There is so much to love about that film.

What's Hound of the D'Ubervilles

What results did you get when you googled it?

(Anonymous) 2017-02-25 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm on my phone and I don't care enough to Google it

(Anonymous) 2017-02-25 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Then you don't care enough to know the answer.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-25 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Not enough that I'll be heartbroken if no one answers, no

If you don't care enough to Google it, then I'm not sure why you think someone else is going to put in the effort you're not willing to do.

It's about Tess of the D'Urberville's dogs.

In seriousness, Google tells me it's a book by Kim Newman about Moriarty/Moran.

Is there an evil Mrs. Hudson? I bet Evil Mrs. Hudson is awesome.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
ngl, I would love to read about Evil Mrs. Hudson.

She owns a brothel.

To be fair, though, Moran is not that bright in ACD stories. The dude has a sniper rifle prototype, yet after the Reichenbach fight he tries to kill Holmes with stones.

Anyway, I don't see Moran as evil!Watson, basically he was on Moriarty's side because of money. That's the reason he was so pissed off: when Moriarty died, Moran became "unemployed", and for some reason he didn't bother to find another job like this one. He's a classical muscle, and from what I remember, he was brought in on rare occasions. So probably (IMO) Moran and Moriarty were not close.

If anything, I think that Moran is an evil version of Lord John Roxton from "The Lost world".

read the Moriarty books by Michael Kurland. you'd probably like them.

Eh, I don't know. Moran is more than just Evil Watson, he's clearly his own character. Unlike Watson who's more doctor than army, Moran's identity as a former military man is at the forefront of his personality. I'd also argue that he IS clever enough to keep up with Moriarty,as much as Watson keeps up with Holmes. Moran displays a lot of insight into what motivates Moriarty, for starters...far more than Moriarty is aware of. Just because his interests are pretty basic, i.e. killing, gambling and fucking doesn't mean he's not cunning. Moran even makes the point several times that people underestimate his intelligence, and that he uses this to his advantage.
