What is the worst part about where you live?

(Anonymous) 2017-02-25 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I live in a shitty small town and I hate that no place delivers food. I just want food to come to me!

It's pretty poor - there are rich spaces but for the most part, it's in disrepair and is terribly outdated.

I counted about 20 abandoned buildings. It's shocking the amount of stores that come for six months an then leave because the rent has risen too high.

Way too conservative. Little to no mix of demographics - old, white, hates the changing of the world - this place was predominantly red in the past election. Though, interestingly on the demographic part, we do have a lot of immigrants...because the cost of living is cheap. It's middle america with a middle america wage of like 8$ an hour, so upward mobility is a pipe dream unless you get lucky and get a job on one of the military installations.

Other than that it's just service, service, service.

There *is* culture, but it's not culture I care about besides the Jazz Festival every May and the Greek Food fair every....November?

I thought you might be talking about Augusta, GA but I think the festival dates are wrong...

People who don't live here don't even know we exist.

Having lived my life holed up in my room during my teen years or living in other cities/countries while studying in uni, I hate that when I'm taking a simple walk through my home town (where I was born and raised for almost 30 years), all the old folks and the people who transfered here in the last 15 or so years send me mean looks. I just want to shout at the young ones "Look, mate, I lived here waaaaay longer than you!", but I just amicably greet them. Fuck them, though. STOP STARING AT ME! Let me walk in peace.

Re: What is the worst part about where you live?

(Anonymous) 2017-02-25 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Wtf. Why would someone give you a look just for existing?

They probably can't understand who I am. It's not a big town, and most of the older people know each other and some even recognise me, while I have shit memory and can't remember faces very well. Plus, in the last 10 years or so lots of new people arrived in new homes so I think they want to understand where I came from.
But it's not the grannies that bother me because I can understand them and they're usually (USUALLY) nice and smiling, but the the people in their 30s who came here not long ago and give me nasty looks! The fuck do they want?! I don't give a fuck of who they are, just let me walk alone. I'm a fairly normal looking woman, too! No threating at all. I don't understand.

Everything's a twenty minute drive. Everything. This is the sprawlingest metro area ever.

But the worst part is my sister lives here. One day I will be free of this blood anchor.

SAME. You can only get gross Pizza Hut or Dominoes delivery here, and it sucks.

Housing. The vacancy rate is crazy low, the rent is crazy high, and the houses all cost over a million dollars.
I wanna get a pet but I'd definitely have to move out of the city.

Everything is insanely expensive and if you don't make 200k (AT LEAST) a year you will need roommates galore and God help you if something terrible happens (like a fire in a warehouse that kills 36 people and suddenly everyone gives a shit about the safety of warehouses being used as living spaces, or a flood displaces 14,000 people who really couldn't afford to lose all their shit in a flood in the first place but who gives a fuck because they're poor people to begin with).

My window looks directly on to the street, so I have to keep my curtains closed at all times unless I want to give random people a floor to ceiling view of my bed. I can't just open my window and have fresh air either. I get exhaust fumes and cigarette smoke every time. I can't air out my room without making the air quality worse.

My friend who moved into a ground floor apartment recently bought privacy window films on Amazon that make your window look like stained glass. Don't know if they come in floor to ceiling sizes but hey, could look into it? They're quite pretty.

That sounds nasty :( Have you considered getting a HEPA air filter or something like that to help with the air quality?

Thank you. I have thought about it. The ones I've seen were pretty expensive though. I might have to shop around.

Crime. My house has been broken into. Bikes not taken inside at night will get their locks cut.

The Christians

I hate how steeped in Christianity this place it. And everyone just assumes you are too, an that praying in public schools is normal and okay.

It really does depend on where you live, I guess. Here in the UK, you go to a catholic school and you are openly agnostic - as I was - you get a few odd looks when it comes up, you have a more... interesting discussions in RE, and you don't have to eat / get to eat those little biscuits of christ and drink the wine during school services, but other than that you don't really have too different a time to all the other kids. Since school, my religious leanings have never come up.

Our neighbouring country which doesn't actually give a shit about how well we are doing here, but throws an epic shit fit everytime we do something different just in case it makes them look bad for continuing with the same old instead of trying something new. They flat out hate us and want to ensure we never try anything they haven't done first. It is getting old.
