I disagree with you about the expressiveness thing, but the uncanny valley bit may be because they use CGI "beauty work" to erase lines and small wrinkles on actors' faces in movies these days. Even young ones. There have been a few shots where the CGI felt too obvious to me (like the scene with old Peggy in her hospital room in CA: Winter Soldier) and I got a bit of the uncanny valley feeling.

If you look at candid pictures of him, even where he's wearing makeup, he has more lines on his face than he does in the extreme closeups in the movies.
