I like this art. [/nothing to add comment]

Oh please, that is a dumb way to feel. As if Sherlock is anything special. Every fandom is overrun with the slashers right now. I can't wait for longform genfic to come back into fashion again.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Which genre is popular has more to do with which fandom you're into than which year we're in.

Plus: go OP! I know that feeling and it's goood.

How will be know it's 'come back into fashion'?

(I know plenty of people who post longform genfic.)

Why is it dumb to lol at homophobes being made to feel uncomfortable or unwelcome in fandom?

And when did OP say that Sherlock is vastly different from any other fandom? And no, not "Every" fandom is "overrun" with slashers. Not all fandoms' juggernaut pairings are m/m.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-27 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
good luck waiting for that

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
If there is one thing I love about slash fandom these days, is that it is largely unapologetic to homophobes. Back in the day, everyone used to "warn for gay themes" and such, even if you were in a fandom with a canon gay relationship. It was so dumb. Now it's totally uncontained, homophobes be damned.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Hear, hear!

As it should be. If "gay themes" offend anoyne anymore, they should get out of this planet.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-27 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I hated doing that back in the day, so I'm relieved I don't have to now. I never, ever thought m/m or f/f relationships needed a "warning" since het ones don't (or didn't, back in the day), but I had enough people claim to be scarred for life if I didn't make it crystal clear that yes, there are same sex relationships in this fic, so back out now if it's not your cuppa.

Dang I'm old. :p

This has got to be the best secret ever! Seriously-- I don't blame you, I would inwardly 'hee' as well--

Just because those type of homophobes bug me the most, I think it's because it's just-- I see it as pretending tolerance, like if their religion could let them currently get away with it, they would gladly cast logs on the zealot fire.

have to say that I love your icon :D

Hate the sin love the sinner may be a weak argument, but there's not really anything *condescending* about it unless you have the emotional fortitude of a tulip.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
And it's easier to put up with than "You're going to hell!" attitudes.

It assumes the sin and the sinner can be separated, which in practice tends to imply the sinner is just confused and doesn't really want to sin. Furthermore, sin doesn't make them happy, and they'll become much happier if they start acting like the person who's deciding what a sin is!

(Anonymous) 2017-02-27 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
since when does the impact of a statement on a person weigh into whether that statement is condescending or not?

(Anonymous) 2017-02-27 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, no. Condescension isn't measured by how weak or strong the person being condescended to is, and "love the sinner hate the sin" is absolutely condescending because it's an insulting little headpat given by jerkwads to people who have the temerity to be homosexual. The condescension part is the implied, "You're still wrong to be gay, but I'm so magnanimous I'm willing to overlook your gayness, which BTW is going to send you to hell".

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Hate to break it to you, OP, but a significant chunk of those slashers are also homophobes.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Where do they hide?

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
In an "almost everyone who is raised in a heteronormative/homophobic society unwittingly harbors some homophobic ideation" sort of way? Sure.

In a "believes being gay is gross/wrong and doesn't support LGBT rights" sort of way? I very much doubt it.

As a 'casual homophobe' who has been in many fandoms with juggernaut slash pairings ... I don't care and never have. Mark it appropriately and go ahead. I have my opinions, but ultimately live and let live. Stressing over other people's actions (that hurt no one else) isn't worth it.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-27 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
As a 'casual homophobe'

well... admitting you have a problem is the first step toward resolving it. :)

(Anonymous) 2017-02-27 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
why are you friends with a bigot tho 😒

(Anonymous) 2017-02-27 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
There are different levels of friendship, and personal growth happens at a different pace for everyone. You weren't always the ultra-enlightened being that you are today, but you weren't universally shunned for it, either.
