[Underworld: Blood Wars]

I started watching the Underworld movie series, and I definitely think there's some race/class coding going on in the portrayals of Lycans and Vampires.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Weren't the two main Lycan's in the first one hot? I never watched past that, so it'd make me sad that they went the ugly route later.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Were there any female Lycans at all?

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That one dude's mother, which we only ever see the shadow of.

Female bulcky wolfcreatures are not sexy enough, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I always wondered if lycans were predominantly male for the similar reasons anon below commented about them being more average looking.

Like, you have to survive being mauled/bitten to turn, right? So if this 250lb animal mauls you, who's more likely to survive that, another large male, or 120lb female?

Actually, as per studies, women survive worse damage than men. Men are stronger, but women's bodies are more resilient. And a man, no mater how strong, doesn't really stand a chance against a giant wolf.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-27 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Where are these "studies"?

http://underworld.wikia.com/wiki/Thread:8352

The wiki says there were at least two, but their characters didn't have names. I remember seeing one who had barely any lines. Like most of the other Lycans, she was dirty with greasy hair.

It's been forever since I've seen the Underworld movie, and haven't seen any others. But as for vampires being hotter, maybe it's like this.

Vampires, in many fictional universes especially Anne Rice onward, deliberately pick the people they want to turn into vampires, and there is often a sexual/romantic component to that. It therefore makes sense that a vampire is likely going to choose a hot, attractive person to turn into a vampire.

Werewolves usually seem to transmit the werewolf disease just from the victim surviving the bite, right? And werewolves never seem to have that "romantic" component to their feeding, it's more like, uncontrollable hunger and they literally want to devour people. It's not sexual. So they probably are more likely to be average looking people rather than skewed sexy.

Well. Ever heard the expression "smelling like wet dog"? That is not high praise. Dogs and wolfs are not known for their great grooming skills, but rather for sniffing a lot of ass and rolling in shit to get that particular family odor.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that Tobias Menzies? Damn, now I actually wanna watch this movie.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Imagine their keyboards. They're probably greasier than the ones in school libraries.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand when people say they watch these movies "for the eye candy." There's like one attractive character and the general design is a bit garish.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Scenic grit can be very nice. It's a bit like "bedhead look": not exactly pretty, but endearing and button-hitting.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, the one attractive character is also the central character who spends the most time on screen

but I agree, they're very bad movies

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who's seen more than her fair share of bad werewolf movies, the Underworld franchise is... not actually terrible.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it seems to me that it depends where you set your level of expectations. I'm sure it's a lot better than most bad werewolf movies but it's just a question of whether you're looking for that or not.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this movie-specific or franchise-specific? Because if it's franchise, Lucian and Raze in the first movie were hot as hell.

I take your point about the distinct lack of female lycans, though.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-27 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
Werewolf races being almost entirely male seems to be a trend in other works too. Strange, since wolves seem to be male and female in equal numbers...
