What musicians have you been surprised to find out are (insert ethnicity)? What did you think they were?

Surprisingly, I seem to be quite good at guessing ethnicity by voice. I can't really remember it happening.

I had no idea Deedee Magno Hall was Filipino. At first I thought she was white, then I thought she was black.

I didn't think she was Filipino either! I'd mistaken her for black initially myself. And I was also surprised to find out that Michaela Dietz was South Korean because she sounded black! Also was surprised that Shelby Rabara was Filipino as well because she herself sounds black!

I didn't realize Wentworth Miller was part black ffor a long time.

It isn't obvious at all. There is a reason he played a black character who was pretending to be a white guy in a movie.

I thought George Thorogood was black for the longest time.

I thought Adele was black, way-back-when.

Same. I didn't mind her when I thought she was black, but when I found out she was actually white I immediately felt she was overrated.

I thought Pitbull was black until I saw a picture of him.

I remember when Marc Broussard's song "Home" was big about ten years or so ago, I kept picturing a black, middle-aged bluesy sort of guy. Clearly, that was not the case :p.

Not ethnicity, but I was surprised Tracy Chapman was a woman. Idk why but I just thought she was a dude.

I thought Elle King (from hearing Exes and O's) was black.

I thought Anastacia was a black woman when I first heard one of her songs on the radio way back when, I also thought Tracy Chapman was a guy for years.

I was really surprised when I found out Amy Winehouse wasn't black.

I know perfectly well what Rick Astley looked like in the 80s, but it still amuses me what a disconnect there is between how he sounds and what he looks like.

Not a musician, but I thought for a very long time (having never seen a photo of him) that Frank Tanana was Japanese-American. He sounds just like all the Japanese-American kids my dad went to high school with, right? But no, Frank Tanana is Polish!

Although there was a Japanese-American pitcher with a Germanic name whose career overlapped with Tanana's: Atlee Hammaker.

I always thought Hewy Lewis was black. Then I saw a picture was all O_o.
