Not ethnicity, but I was surprised Tracy Chapman was a woman. Idk why but I just thought she was a dude.

Oh good. The few times I've told people this they act like it's the weirdest assumption they've ever heard.

Nah, the thing was actually I had a friend who LOVED the song and played it ad nauseum, but I never saw a clip or whatever, and just by voice...

Yeah, I thought the same thing, too, at first. Now I've heard a few of her songs more, I'm used to it, but it can throw you a bit at first.

My voice has dropped a lot since then, but in high school I think my range and the texture of my voice were very close to Tracy Chapman. Melissa Etheridge was a bit higher-pitched, but she used to sing like a rock guy. Both sounded like male singers to me, even as I knew they were women.

She sounds like a deep-voiced woman to me, but I have a friend who was absolutely POSITIVE Tracy Chapmen was a guy until we showed her concrete evidence to the contrary. So you're definitely not the only one.

I'd only ever heard one song by Alabama Shakes (the song was Hold On), and I thought for sure the singer was a guy. Now that I know otherwise, it seems obvious the lead singer is a girl, but somehow she just didn't sound like a girl to me at first.
