I don't know if the Empire was ever supposed to be ideologically very similar to the Nazis, but with things like the shape of Vader's helmet and the term "stormtrooper," there have been deliberate choices all along to *remind* the audience of Nazis, so it's not weird people would equate them with Nazis.

They're absolutely meant to remind people of Nazis, no doubt. But I think the big thing people are arguing is, is a duck decoy a duck? It certainly looks like a duck, there's do doubt about it, it's certainly based on a duck, but it can't swim, quack, fly, or lay eggs. You can't feed it grain. You can't eat it.

So you have a movie with a pond and a duck decoy floating on it and people are getting hung up on arguing if it's supposed to represent a real duck in the story and they just didn't do a good job of showing it, or if it's supposed to just be a duck decoy. And do people think it's cool because they like real life ducks or do they just think they look pretty and know real life ducks poop and bite?

I don't think anyone would argue that the duck decoy wasn't ever meant to LOOK like a duck and be based on a duck, but everything else is just quibbling over the levels of duck-ness involved.

The shape of Vader's helmet? He wears kabuto armor. While that would align with the Axis powers, that's half a world away from Germany.
