Aggravating Fandom Things

What are some of yours?

I hate when you find a great fic. Great characterization. Long. Gen. Well written. Complete. 10/10 fic. So you go to see what else the author has written and it is fandoms you know nothing about or nothing at all.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-02 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
If the first fic was that good, I'd still give the rest a try.

I follow the AO3 ship tag for my pairing on tumblr and there is way too much fluff out there for this non-fluffy ship. Lame as fuck fluff. Worse than the Hallmark Channel fluff. "If this were canon, it would have gone straight to video and only diehard fans would watch it and they would post play-by-play reviews laughing at how awful it is"-quality fluff. Wtf is wrong with people's taste.

And DON'T GIVE ME ANY SHit about policing people's tastes, y'all. I make no comments on the fic itself, I'm just venting here.

Not gonna give you any shit, but I'm curious: what ship?

I hate when abandoned fics are marked "complete". They are not complete. Deciding you're not going to write any more doesn't change that.

People's completely OOC headcanons, especially if they insist they're correct.

Fucking this!

Re: Aggravating Fandom Things

(Anonymous) 2017-03-02 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. And bonus points if they insist that people are bigots for not sharing them.

The lack of meta and speculation fic (you know, backstory and such).

I really don't care how many kinky sexual positions you can put characters in. I want the inner workings of the world I love enough to read fic/meta for in the first place.

And when I do find writers or fandomers into the same, as someone said above, it's always fandoms I'm not in.

Nicknames that have never once been used in canon! I can't stand this. I'm having a rough time of FFXV fic right now because everyone and their mother uses "Prom" for Prompto, and... no one has ever called him that! It's getting to be an insta-back button for me.

I hate that one of the more popular pairings in the fandom is just so... well it could definitely be taken as abusive. But because it's two hot-ish white guys put together, fandom is all over it.

When a writer with good ideas cannot decide whether the fic is in past or present tense and just randomly switches back and forth every few sentences, sometimes mid-sentence.

Re: Aggravating Fandom Things

(Anonymous) 2017-03-02 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
For me this is probably the worst (i.e. most distracting) grammatical mistake a fic writer can make. It always kind of shocks me how many people have no ear for tenses, even when they are otherwise very able writers.

Anything with the whiff of being canonly gay being declared fujobait. Like, how much do you hate gay people that anything remotely canonly gay is this.

Re: Aggravating Fandom Things

(Anonymous) 2017-03-02 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Now, now, if the writers didn't want it to be fujobait, they'd prove it by making one of the characters grossly ugly. That'd scare away all the fujos and keep all the people who are really interested in gay representation. Because Real Gays love watching ugly characters.

I know you're being facetious but it makes me so angry knowing there's people who actually think like that.

An RP blog posting their headcanons in the main tag and getting SUPER PISSY at anyone who DARES to comment or add something to their headcanon and insisting that their RP partner is the ONLY one who can do that.

Excuse you, bitches, make your damn blogs private and post your shitty ass headcanons there so only you and your crappy RP partner can blather on that way.

Fuckers.

That some of fandom is super-critical about one pairing "It has a two year age gap, that's pedo!" "She doesn't immediately like him when they first meet!" "It's heteronormative!" When every single thing they use to explain why the pairing is bad applies the same or worse to the fandom favorite pairing. It has a 5 year age gap and she flat out states she dislikes him and never wants to date him when they first meet and it's just as m/f as the first pairing.

I don't really like either pairing, but it pisses me off when I see people with fandom-fave pairing going on and on about how horrible other-pairing is and how gross the shippers are.

Re: Aggravating Fandom Things

(Anonymous) 2017-03-02 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate that shipping certain pairings has been made into a moral obligation in my fandom.

Said multiple times before, but seeing "dad" or "mom" applied to any character who's not a biological parent or raising a child under the age of ten will make me make annoyed chicken sounds.

Re: Aggravating Fandom Things

(Anonymous) 2017-03-02 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! I don't like it either, but I don't do the annoyed chicken sounds. Maybe I should!

(Anonymous) 2017-03-03 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
...Man, as someone from a shitty home situation: fuck you. My actual parental figure didn't raise me and came into my life in my teens.

As always, lack of long, well-plotted genfic.
