"We" who? The civilians? Again, where would you fit this into a story like that? The characters don't have the luxury seeing any further than the fact that their lives are fucked and they need to try not to die.

It's possibly significant here that the characters in Grave of the Fireflies are children and thus had no control (and probably very little opinion, given their age) over anything that happened one way or the other. Perhaps that's a cop-out. On the other hand, it's inarguable that children died.
