"preachy old man" how dare he have cared about the social issues of his day, such as slavery and the horrors of the Belgian Congo. totally not things that anyone should have "preached" against.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
that wasn't the problem. he automatically assumed a non human crew member was a slave.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
that's not "real life" though?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Americans had no business sticking their mustachioed noses into European Africa.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
European Africa had no business chopping off the hands of little children to punish their parents for not working hard enough at their slave labor, but you are clearly a troll so whatever

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe, but it was still not the place of Americans to get involved. The problems of European Africa should have been for Europeans to solve as they saw fit within a European context.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
or, and bear with me here I know it is a radical concept, they could have left Africa the fuck alone instead of going in and killing/maiming/abusing/exploiting the people there?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
That shows a remarkable ignorance of history. Africa and Europe have always had intertwined histories. It is not as simple as either going in anywhere. You should be aware that Africa has raided Europe as much as Europe raided Africa. Look up the Barbary Pirates, for just one example.

And the Barbary Coast is of course further away from the Congo than from Western Europe. As you know.
Berbers are practically Europeans compared to Congolese natives. As you know.
And this has nothing to do with the Belgians in the Congo. As you know.
And even if it had one thing to do with the Belgians in the Congo, it would make no difference at all to the right of observers to speak out against it, be they from France, America, the Moon, or the Andromeda Galaxy. As you know.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
SO Africans are Europeans if it supports your position but other Africans are Not European when your position changes? You talk bullshit, mate.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
No, the important thing is that Americans, who are of course perfect, get to preach at everyone else. Get with the program.
raspberryrain: (roll eyes)

[personal profile] raspberryrain 2017-03-05 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a pathetic trolling attempt. There's not really any such thing as "European Africa."

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
History disagrees.
raspberryrain: (yuck)

[personal profile] raspberryrain 2017-03-06 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
And there really isn't any such thing as Belgian Africa. The King of Belgium was entirely in the wrong there, and anyone who knew what was going on had both right and obligation to speak out about it.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
It was an internal matter for the Belgians, in and out of Africa. Nothing to do with America or Americans.

You don't believe this. You are taking an incredibly vile position just to be a troll. That is all.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Plenty of Europeans were abolitionists who spoke out against slavery in the US specifically, but I'm sure that's somehow completely different.
