Probably going to see it cause I wanna see Emma as Belle. Though part of me can't help thinking "did it HAVE to be a guy on the side of the villain?"

I kinda want to go see it in spite after my mom told me she understood why theaters were boycotting it because "how do you explain a gay person to kids?"

"Some guys like guys and some girls like girls." Boom there you go.

In fairness though, I'm going to guess that the character is 90% the way he was in the cartoon, if not 100%. They can say that, change nothing else about him, and let context do all the work cause lets face it, LeFou wasn't all that heterosexual the first time around

Remember when he gave Gaston a handy in the bushes?

lol holy shit. I never noticed that but I've seen enough porn art to see where that's going.

I'm totally going with Louis CK on this one: http://i.imgur.com/eVBBh.jpg

No offense to your mother, but it's not that hard to explain. When parents say this, they're projecting their own discomfort with homosexuality onto their children, who I can almost guarantee you either don't care or won't be anywhere near as confused as their parents seem to believe.

I know

and what made it more awkward. I'm bi, so... having my mom say that is just really irritating.

Great, you think my attraction is so inappropriate it should be banned. fantastic. nice to know, mother.

(I mean she doesn't know and that solidified that I'm not telling her anytime soon.

and that's exactly what it is. Children will probably accept it if you tell them simply. What they usually mean is "how do I explain this to my child and make sure they know how WRONG it is"

Yeah, I wouldn't let that cat out of the bag until I was out of the house and financially independent. There's no guarantee your parents will be jerks about it, but better safe than sorry.

IMO, parents who say that might vehemently deny being homophobic, but there's obviously some deep, dark reason why they think that explaining what homosexuality is might be too inappropriate for kids. I mean, have you see how weird childrens' TV is? If nobody needed to explain what the hell the Teletubbies were to little kids, then gay people aren't going to be a difficult topic. And anyway, explaining stuff to your kid is what you signed up for by becoming a parent, so quit whining.

LMAO, I love this :D. Good point.

THANK YOU. This. Explaining things is how kids learn, for fuck's sake.

Spoilers below maybe? For a movie that's not out yet.

Well they've promised that there's going to be a "nice" gay moment at the end, so what I predict is that in this version, Lefou's going to switch sides and find a new guy who's better for him along the way.

Because it's either that or Gaston will realize he's gay too so he doesn't need Belle after all, and he and Lefou ride off into the sunset together.

I don't want Gaston to live through this, so yeah, hopefully LeFou finds a better man.

... So we all want it to be Cogsworth right?

I kinda want to go see it in spite after my mom told me she understood why theaters were boycotting it because "how do you explain a gay person to kids?"

...she is aware that there are children out there who have/know people who have gay parents or other family members, right?

Yeah. I don't get that line of thinking, either. Like you said, the explanation really doesn't need to be that complicated.

I dunno maybe. Maybe she just thinks they're unhealthy or something I dunno. I don't like to breach her full thoughts on that topic because I don't want to know just how against it she may be.

I think it's more about explaining it without showing your own biases about it? Or explaining it without condemning it.

I mean they had a huge talk with my brother about how homosexuality was WRONG after he made two women kiss in Sims and took away the game for years.

Well damn. Yeah, I agree with people above, you make sure you are secure financially and ready to burn that bridge before she knows.

Hopefully confronted with the issue at home it will go better then that, but it's not a risk to take if you don't have to.

Possibly. Even then, though, such an explanation still seems so simple to me, but...go figure with some people.

Damn. I'm sorry you have to deal with that nonsense.
