Re: Disney's First Gay Character
I kinda want to go see it in spite after my mom told me she understood why theaters were boycotting it because "how do you explain a gay person to kids?"
"Some guys like guys and some girls like girls." Boom there you go.

Remember when he gave Gaston a handy in the bushes?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)No offense to your mother, but it's not that hard to explain. When parents say this, they're projecting their own discomfort with homosexuality onto their children, who I can almost guarantee you either don't care or won't be anywhere near as confused as their parents seem to believe.
Re: Disney's First Gay Character
and what made it more awkward. I'm bi, so... having my mom say that is just really irritating.
Great, you think my attraction is so inappropriate it should be banned. fantastic. nice to know, mother.
(I mean she doesn't know and that solidified that I'm not telling her anytime soon.
and that's exactly what it is. Children will probably accept it if you tell them simply. What they usually mean is "how do I explain this to my child and make sure they know how WRONG it is"
Re: Disney's First Gay Character
(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)IMO, parents who say that might vehemently deny being homophobic, but there's obviously some deep, dark reason why they think that explaining what homosexuality is might be too inappropriate for kids. I mean, have you see how weird childrens' TV is? If nobody needed to explain what the hell the Teletubbies were to little kids, then gay people aren't going to be a difficult topic. And anyway, explaining stuff to your kid is what you signed up for by becoming a parent, so quit whining.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 12:51 am (UTC)(link)LMAO, I love this :D. Good point.
And anyway, explaining stuff to your kid is what you signed up for by becoming a parent, so quit whining.
THANK YOU. This. Explaining things is how kids learn, for fuck's sake.
Spoilers below maybe? For a movie that's not out yet.
(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)Because it's either that or Gaston will realize he's gay too so he doesn't need Belle after all, and he and Lefou ride off into the sunset together.

... So we all want it to be Cogsworth right?
Re: Disney's First Gay Character
(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 12:49 am (UTC)(link)...she is aware that there are children out there who have/know people who have gay parents or other family members, right?
Yeah. I don't get that line of thinking, either. Like you said, the explanation really doesn't need to be that complicated.
Re: Disney's First Gay Character
I think it's more about explaining it without showing your own biases about it? Or explaining it without condemning it.
I mean they had a huge talk with my brother about how homosexuality was WRONG after he made two women kiss in Sims and took away the game for years.
Re: Disney's First Gay Character
Hopefully confronted with the issue at home it will go better then that, but it's not a risk to take if you don't have to.
Re: Disney's First Gay Character
(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 02:38 am (UTC)(link)Possibly. Even then, though, such an explanation still seems so simple to me, but...go figure with some people.
Damn. I'm sorry you have to deal with that nonsense.
