Was there something crazy that happened in a fandom? A vicious shipping war? A fallout after controversial new canon? Tell us your fandom wank war stories!

I don't remember the specific episode but I will never forget the Mark Watches wank for Buffy where people were talking in the comments about pre-Seeing Red Spike without factoring the post-Seeing Red "AR" into their opinions and everything exploded with people - some who'd seen that far and some who hadn't - fighting with one group while patting themselves nd the other on the back and mods telling people to sit down, shut up or GTFO.

Because, you know, anybody who didn't fall into the hive mind must suck at the teat of privilege and have no problems whatsoever.

Mark Watches is just one endless churn of stupid wank, mainly because of the stupid wanker himself.

I hven't been there in so long*, and there's a part of me that's grateful to be rid of the nonsense but another part of me that's so curious about current wank.

*My breaking point was the utter refusal to look at the Star Treks as products of their time but rather to judge them by the social justice metrics of today. Made through TNG and vowed never again.

He's just completely incapable of considering anything other than in a West Coast Millennial cultural context. He erases other countries context in order to make things fit his own, that is just as racist. He also is completely unable to see nuance and is an all or nothing absolutist. Plus he likes Janeway for some reason, and that is just wrong.

It's been a long time and I was never a Big Name Player, but I was down in the trenches for some Invader Zim wank back in the day. Like I was one of the many people editing encyclopedia dramatica during the edit war. Ah, youth.

Ack I forgot about encyclopedia dramatica.

I never edited it, but I admit I did read it to laugh about terrible BNFs and cosplayers. I feel bad about it though, that shit was so awful. Thank god for not being 14 anymore.

Not really a PART of it, but I was in the same crowd as the bad_penny people who exposed certain then-BNFs in the Harry Potter fandom, and I knew their plans...

Oooh, you insider! I remember that being some big shit back in the day. I was never in HP fandom but my roommate at the time was in deep.

What a great time that was - I wasn't in Harry Potter fandom at all, but it seemed like a pan-fandom event - everyone dropped what they were doing and went to read the MsScribe expose. It was amazing.

Oh Harry Potter wank was so intense and now so infamous. Can't believe the MsScribe wank happened and the whole intense toxic shipping wars. So glad as a teenager I made that decision to just stay out of it and write my fanfics without getting into the whole shipping wars.

I'm ashamed that I may have participated on fanficrants way back in the day. But I realized relatively quickly what a shitty, toxic place it was. It was especially boggling when it became infested with SJWs. Like, it was a bullying community, but now also self-righteous. Amazing.

Similar story to yours, though unfortunately I bought into the whole atmosphere and it took me years to grow out of it. As much as I'd like to say I was just an impressionable teenager, I was old enough to know better.

I lurked a lot of Doctor Who/Torchwood wanks from ~2008-12. Those were good days, ha ha ha.

The head mod of TV Tropes, Fast Eddie, was absolutely obsessed with rooting out pedophiles and Something Awful members (which he seemed to think were the same thing.) If you didn't approve of his witch hunt for pedophiles, you were clearly a pedophile apologist.

He announced a new rule about when pages about fictional works should be deleted, intended to purge any works that were basically just pedophile porn. I observed that the letter of the law would delete Lolita, and he'd said in the past that Lolita would be protected. I said that I wanted to see some protections for other stories that were like Lolita, but weren't as famous or well-respected. Another poster chimed in asking to please not delete Lolita.

Fast Eddie said that Lolita was pedophile porn and the only people who ever brought it up were pedophiles. He deleted the Lolita page and replaced it with a page saying that TV Tropes didn't cover porn. Then he went on a mass purge of "porn," including every single entry on the H-Game index. (This was how Fate Stay Night was briefly deleted as porn.) The resultant flame war lasted for months and led to the banning or departure of at least twenty people, including myself.

I was a naive baby fan during the early fan wars of the Danny Phantom fandom. I believed certain false rumors about a certain rule 34 artist.

I wasn't really a part of anything big, but my friends at the time were. And I was around for a lot of that. The Cassie Clare stuff, some HP wank, racewank, strikethrough (is that fandom wank??), and that one where that BNF confessed to have been lying about fanfic searches she posted and compiling data and laughing about the replies? I don't think that ever got a fancy wank name, but I recall it spreading and people getting ragey and pissed off towards the end of SGA fandom.

I'm not sure it counts as "infamous" since it was very localized, but years ago I was in a fandom space on LJ (can't recall what the fandom was tbh, it was a LONG time ago---some game that I don't remember the name of) and people were discussing how one character from the game was Definitely Absolutely 100% Trans NO Question About It And Anyone Who Disagreed Was An Evil Transphobe. I had a very sheltered upbringing and had literally never encountered the concept of trans-ness before in my life, and was deeply confused, so I commented asking what it was all about and why did they think the character was like that, and apparently this was the most deeply hateful and malicious thing anyone there had ever heard, because about 10 people immediately dogpiled me screaming about how I was clearly lying about not knowing about this, calling me various names, and saying that I was being an evil troll who was being dismissive of transpeople with my cissexism. They refused to actually answer anything I asked, so I inquired (politely! I was a newbie to the world of fandom and still thought that discourse was supposed to be polite) if they didn't want to tell me about it, could they direct me to some good sources, because I didn't know if I would find trustworthy ones just by googling. Apparently this meant I was literally the devil because how dare I impose on them like that, I needed to educate myself and stay away from LJ till I learned to not be the worst person in the world. It was a completely insane and baffling experience to me, and made me actually afraid of trans people for some time thereafter (of course, that's not the case anymore, I've encountered plenty of perfectly nice ones.)

You obviously must have dropped into fandom when it was still stuck in its "IT'S NOT MY JOB TO EDUCATE YOU" phase. I'm sure some fandoms are still in that phase, but there was a point where it seemed to be a fandom-wide trend where that was default response to any query on social issues, no matter how polite or well-intentioned.

I can only think of two situations that I saw or was on the periphery of. One was a small dispute in the LotR slash circles in '04, where an author I was fond of got into an argument over the particulars of Sindarin grammar. Not big enough to get onto Fandom Wank or the like.

The other did get onto Fandom Wank, a person I knew via Kingdom Hearts got into a fight and broke up with her long-distance boyfriend who had a pile of her fandom memorabilia, including part of her My Little Pony collection. There was a letter that I think he wrote that had some phrase about how the ponies hated her. I was only a witness to her LJ posts bitching about his embracing the Furry Fandom and her annoyance at it.

I was part of the Fandomsecrets husky wank. Despite being kind of peeved at the time, I have nothing but fond memories of how silly that all got.

Sooo much deviantart/side7/tlkfaa/furaffinity/furbid wank. Soooo much. I was really annoyed when ED died, so much of my articles lost. Then someone put some of them back. No idea how it is now, don't even remember the names of people.

And it was very bad of teenage/young adult me. I am disappointed in my younger self, not cool.
