There are some differences, though.

A lot of fanfic doesn't have the same world-building or character description that other fiction does because that's been done by the canon. Now, AUs, depending on the type, can have much more of that world-building, but, often, fanfic needs a point of reference. Of course, there are ways to get the gist of a piece of media without experiencing it firsthand, though when that media is easily available, some people will wonder why someone wants to read about those characters without trying out the media they originate from. I will say that sometimes fanon can be preferable to canon, for me.
