As a suicida, self loathingl person with a history of abuse: its still your responsibility to not perpetuate abuse or abuse others. Mental illness or history of abuse is in no way an excuse to harm others, especially children you have power over.

Snape was a mean teacher, he wasn't abusive.

What utter horseshit. If you don't consider Snape to be an abusive teacher, then you have no idea what abuse is.

Bullying is abusive. Threatening to kill a child's pet, mocking a child for being smart and wanting to learn, joining in with children in bullying a child for her appearance, repeatedly threatening to drug people you don't like, etc. and so forth -- this is abusive behavior when it's coming from someone who is in a position of power over a child, like a teacher.
