Are you me, OP? I feel exactly the same way. Given a choice, I'll take the fanfic over the published book every time. Which is not to say I don't still read books, but fanfic is easier. I care about the characters, I usually know the setting, fics are easy to pick up when I have a few free moments and just as easy to put down, and the variety is amazing.

Plus, honestly, there are fanfic authors that are better than published authors, and I have the flexibility to choose the length of story to suit my circumstances. I have a fifteen minutes? Short story, 5-10k. I have an hour? 30-45k. I have an evening? The really long fics come out. Everything is searchable, I can use tags to refine my searches...but I do love the smell and feel of books, and I won't be giving them up completely. It's just difficult to choose a book when fanfiction is so easy.

The length of a fic and the time I have definitely have a lot to do with it for me. Plus I love the familiarity of fic characters too.

If you like genre stuff (scifi/fantasy), try hanging out on tor.com or uncannymagazine.com for a little bit. You can check out fun short stories and novellas with less of the time/brain investment needed for a full book, and if you find an author you really love, odds are decent they have a novel or two you can check out.

I definitely spent years of my life in exactly the place you describe and feeling sad and guilty about it - partly because I was burnt out and depressed and easy instant gratification was something I needed - but for the last couple of years I've gotten back to reading a lot more. Now I've settled into a better balance. Just because this is where you are now doesn't mean it's where you'll always be, but don't stress too much - if you don't enjoy it, you won't keep it up. And it's your own free time, so why should you!
