The length of a fic and the time I have definitely have a lot to do with it for me. Plus I love the familiarity of fic characters too.

If you like genre stuff (scifi/fantasy), try hanging out on tor.com or uncannymagazine.com for a little bit. You can check out fun short stories and novellas with less of the time/brain investment needed for a full book, and if you find an author you really love, odds are decent they have a novel or two you can check out.

I definitely spent years of my life in exactly the place you describe and feeling sad and guilty about it - partly because I was burnt out and depressed and easy instant gratification was something I needed - but for the last couple of years I've gotten back to reading a lot more. Now I've settled into a better balance. Just because this is where you are now doesn't mean it's where you'll always be, but don't stress too much - if you don't enjoy it, you won't keep it up. And it's your own free time, so why should you!
