Are there western audio dramas? I associate that with Japan, lol.

Fictional podcast seasons maybe?

There actually are quite a few, I'd say. They've been around for decades. (War of the Worlds was the most famous/infamous and dates back to 1938.)

I think they used to be called "radio plays" but they seem to be a thing. The company that produced the Torchwood ones has cranked out hundreds of audios.

There are some, but they're not that prominent. I would say that outside of new-fangled podcasts, and Golden Age of Radio serials, Doctor Who fandom is weirdly one of the only places that's really big on them, because of the whole hiatus thing. But they are genuinely kind of important for Doctor Who. Big Finish is really good at them.

Big Finish is marvellous - and sometimes better than TV. "Spare Parts" is hands down my favourite Cybermen story. (It also allows them to be shamelessly niche. I adore that Caroline Symcox one about the Council of Nicea, but there's no way that could have been televised).

Doctor Who has a tradition of "episodes" produced as audio dramas, which sprang up during the hiatus between the old show and the current one. See: Big Finish.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy started out as an audioplay. So did Mighty Boosh. I don't know to what prevalence they are now, but it's def been a popular starting medium in Western Europe at least.

Big Finish, the company producing the Torchwood plays, has licences for many cult TV shows that are no longer on the air. (And a few Who characters that are.) I don't know that they're massively well known, but they certainly have enough customers to keep afloat. There have also been a number of high profile radio dramas of cult material on the BBC recently, such as several Neil Gaiman stories. I think the profile of the genre is rising in the UK at least. (Maybe something to do with podcasts being popular.)
