TMI Advice thread- please help

I need advice, and I didn't know where else to ask.

TMI-health and vagina stuff

(Anonymous) 2017-03-08 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
So I currently have a yeast infection. Bleh. The thing is, I also have vaginismis, which makes taking the over the counter suppository things difficult at best. My primary care doctor is male, and I'm not comfortable talking with him about this sort of thing.

Are there other OTC options for yeast infections that don't involve sticking something up into my vagina? I did buy one of the things to try (the 3 day one), and it hurts so bad right now, I don't think I can do the other two doses.

I ordinarily use the topical cream, which are said to be more effective than the suppository. But that also involves inserting a plastic tube and squirting it up inside yourself, unfortunately. Also, as tempting as it sounds to get the kind that requires only three days, my experience is that you can get to the end of those three days and all the bad yeast isn't quite dead yet. Get the 7 day.

There is also a pill you can take orally, Diflucan is the brand name. I think you might have to ask for it at the pharmacy. You can also ask for a consult with the pharmacist for more suggestions.

And please consider getting a primary care physician you can speak to comfortably, because dealing properly with health issues is going to require a lot of TMI details. Going to the internet will do in a pinch, but it's really not ideal.

Seconding the definitely go for the seven-day dose, also because the shorter dosages are stronger and you can end up having unpleasant reactions if you're sensitive. I tried the three-day dose once and NEVER AGAIN, yet the seven-day one didn't bother me at all.

OK i can't help w/ this exactly, but i used to have a lot of UTIs & now i don't. pearls yb for prevention, and a little baking soda in water, sip some thru out the day to adjust your ph & make infections less able to take hold of your lady areas. also d-manoose for prevention. the latter 2 hints were rec'd by a naturopathic doctor, the first i found on my own. be very diligent, take ALL of these every day till your body is stronger to avoid yeast & uti. it's really worth it...
sorry i cant help more specifically.

Drinking cranberry juice really does help, too. I drink a glass or take a cranberry capsule if I feel a UTI coming on and that keeps them at bay.

i forgot to add coconut oil! someone below mentioned it, and yes, that's definitely a good (and harmless) substance to put on if you're starting to feel itchy/uncomfortable down there, like something is starting externally. it will discourage the growth and soothe discomfort without any side effects

If it's possible for you to see a different doctor, please find one that you're comfortable speaking to about your body.

If you've been prescribed medication in a course (take X amount over X number of days) then you need to speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you want to stop or change it, or if you're having any adverse reactions.

I can't give you medical advice, and I don't know what medications are available to you. These people are the ones you need to talk to. I can only tell you that it's a very common issue. Some people find the short course anti-fungal treatment causes a lot of irritation, many people are uncomfortable with suppositories. On an average day working in a pharmacy I talked to so many people about vaginal health that I wouldn't remember their faces by the end up the day. Your most embarrassing moment of the century would not even register as weird or unusual to me - and I mean that in a comforting way.

We sell vagina stuff. People talk to us about vagina stuff. That's what they pay us for.

Well, I just had to deal with this myself, though I went through a whole course of suppository probiotics, I also did a few other treatments because I was desperate to get things back to normal. If you can't stick anything up there, get some unflavored yogurt (I had kefir, lots more probiotics in it) with NO sugar added, and spread that on a pad, and wear it for an hour or two. You can do this a few times a day. I also took baths with a cup or two of apple cider vinegar, and did the pad/tampon immediately after. Take oral women's health probiotics, as well. I heard there were other options, such as tea tree oil in the bath (just a few drops), or coconut oil for their bacteria fighting abilities, but above all else what you want is to rebalance your good bacteria and replace what's been killed off. Don't douche.

I should also mention, cut back on sugar in your diet for a while.
