You mean that it's NOT misogynistic because all of the computers are hot girls that people would rather be with than real girls? And that there are only hot girls as computers?

Re: 20

[identity profile] serenity-winner.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
There were boy computers. It's just the the manga was written for a primarily male audience.

Re: 20

[identity profile] floralcloud.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I just didn't notice then. my bad :p

Re: 20

[identity profile] mature.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
There were plenty of "male" computers. It's just that CLAMP's art is so damned prettified that it was hard to tell. One I had thought was just a flat-chested girl until "his" user stated otherwise. :P

Re: 20

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was wondering about that, too. I mean, the OP is okay with the whole premise but not with the fact that a computer who couldn't feel pleasure anyway, is not going to have sex?

Re: 20

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, since there were male computers, and the entire point of the series was that the persocoms felt emotions (such as love) the same way people did, and that falling in love with a persocom should be just as acceptable as falling in love with another human being, and that the emotion could in fact be returned, I have to say that the series is actually a lot less misogynistic than it looks at first glance.

Re: 20

[identity profile] khym-chanur.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
... and the entire point of the series was that the persocoms felt emotions (such as love) the same way people did ...

Wait, I thought the point, at least in the manga was (highlight for spoilers) . Or, at least, that what the last few chapters of the series seem to say, even though it completely contradicts everything else the manga had been building up to. Gah.

Re: 20

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
... Wow, I may need to reread. I didn't think that it ever said that , and the mere fact that, at the very end, seems to disagree with that if they did say it. Maybe it was a bad translation, because it certainly doesn't seem to make any sense?

(Also, Chisame was totally hoping for her daughter's happiness, and if Chii couldn't feel happiness etc, that seems sorta bizarre too. AUGH CLAMP BE LESS CONFUSING.)

Re: 20

[identity profile] khym-chanur.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I might be the one mis-remembering things, and I haven't read it in a while, but I think that I'm remembering it right because the ending pissed me off so much.

Re: 20

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Ahh, in that case, I can see THAT being reason for ire, yeah. Though in that case I still think the problem is much bigger than "DOESN'T CHII HAVE A CLITORIS??" (especially since she's... Chii anyway, orz too innocent for touching, what the shit is this XD).

Re: 20

[identity profile] khym-chanur.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, page 91 of TokyoPop volume 8 (highlight for spoilers):

That made me go O_O, then think "What the Hell, CLAMP?!" But I dunno, maybe she's lying as a way to test Hideki?

Re: 20

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, I hope that was a test or a really bad translation. (I like how it also doesn't make sense coming from Freya, since, lol, I have no idea wtf is going on there.)

Re: 20

[identity profile] khym-chanur.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, yes, bad translation, that's a rationalization I can cling to.

Re: 20

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
It makes more sense than it being accurate, since it disagrees with 100% of the storyline before and after it. XD; Wtf Clamp.

Re: 20

[identity profile] khym-chanur.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
But isn't CLAMP know for WTF endings?

Re: 20

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
No, she's right. Persocons only can feel "emotion" to the extent of their AI programming, they can't truly experience the complexity and flexibity of human emotions, only a logical procession of what suitable "emotion" for the situation. Chii was built with an AI programming that can somewhat experience human "love" by her choosing the "one person only for me" to be loyal for the rest of her lifespan, no matter what circumstances. She can't fall out of love unless someone resets her. Her "love" would never waver nor change, like humans do. Freya was trying to make Hideki see that before he decided to be Chii's "one person only for me".

Re: 20

[identity profile] khym-chanur.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
I would think that "not being able to experience emotions with the same subtlety and complexity of a human" isn't the same as "no emotions". Freya could have said "if you hook up with her there's no going back because she'll love you forever".

Re: 20

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
No, the difference is because Chii only "loves" because its a command of her program, nothing more. It's more of a simulation than an actual emotion.

Re: 20

[identity profile] wishmasterfuuma.livejournal.com 2008-05-15 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure they explained around that same place in the manga that the emotions of persocoms are the simulations in their programming.

And then Hideki said Chi's emotions may not be real because she is a computer, but they are real because her simulated smile does something in his human heart.

I think the point there was that something may not be "real" but is still real to us if we choose to acknowledge its affects. A computer's smile can be seen as programming or as a smile and Hideki saw it as a smile, which makes it real to him. ...Make sense? Or am I rambling?

Re: 20

[identity profile] ceasefire.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
What, Zima is female and Yumi isn't hot now?

Re: 20

[identity profile] floralcloud.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't say that Yumi wasn't, I'm saying that it seemed as if people would rather be with their computers than with people.

Also, Zima was just one exception :p
Besides, my bad if there were more, because I haven't read the manga in years.

Re: 20

[identity profile] wishmasterfuuma.livejournal.com 2008-05-15 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
I do remember one male persocom being highlighted in the manga and I remember catching a few in some crowd scenes. I specifically looked when this came up amongst friends.

But they were hot males, for sure. Just like they're hot girls.

...And really, I think men would be getting hot girl persocoms before women got hot men persocoms and going even further, women would be more discreet about buying eye candy. So I actually think the grossly lop-sided ratio is... pretty accurate to society today.
