I always assumed that the crew got to eat some. Well, the parts that weren't burnt or raw.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-09 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Same! Or things that were cooked well but weren't eaten by crew were then given to the homeless or donated to a soup kitchen (to be eaten immediately?)...

In the episodes where they make lots of plates, the waitstaff probably gets some of the leftovers too.

You mean they throw that stuff away? It's perfectly good food with (presumably) lots of people around willing to eat it...I'd imagine it'd get eaten

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
On most of the shows, the leftover food goes to the crew.

On, for example, Cupcake Wars, where you're dealing with thousands of cupcakes at the end, the crew takes what they want and the rest goes to a local soup kitchen.

It's a pretty decadent use of good food, but they're not just binning it all after the cameras are off.

Oh well that's reassuring. It was something that always bugged me too. Thanks informative!anon!

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
That's cool, I always wondered that about Cupcake Wars.

That's good to know!

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure at least Food Network stuff gets sent home with the crew.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Depending on the show, it could be used to feed the crew or donated to charity. Nothing goes to waste if it can be eaten. One of the best people for donating is Guy Fieri. He might look like a real tool but all that leftover food from his Guy's Grocery Games gets donated.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, Guy's not so bad! He gets too much hate. He has a theme and he runs with it. And glad to hear about the food!

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah that's why I said he looked like a tool but when I found out he donates that full Grocery store full of food including fresh veg and fruit he really went up in my esteem.

There were a bunch of stories about him being homophobic and a misogynist a while back but everyone seems to ignore them now

's weird

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's probably because those stories were debunked tbh. The person who made the claims was someone who was fired because he "violated his contract and mistreated staff (sending e.mail messages that said things such as, “I hope you die so I can dance on your fucking grave”)." and I haven't seen much substantiation of them?

Plus, Guy Fieri officiated 101 gay marriages in Florida, as a tribute to his late sister, so if he is homophobic, he's hiding it very well.

Internalized homophobia is a thing. You don't have to think gay people are sinners and going to hell in order to tell an offensive joke or snort derisively at a drag queen.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
?

As far as I can tell, he isn't gay? Which wouldn't make it 'internalized homophobia'?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't have to be gay to internalize bigoted viewpoints about gay people. That's not what internalization means.

No, but it is what "internalized homophobia" means. If he's homophobic, he'd just be... Homophobic.

Again, the claims re: his so called behavior have never been substantiated by anyone without an ax to grind (the one person who claimed to have seen it is/was being paid by the person with an ax to grind, can you see the conflict of interest, when it's never been given weight by anyone else that worked with him?)

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad to hear from other comments that some of it gets donated and mostly seems like it's not thrown away but...idk about you OP but I can't with the fancy cooking competitions where they, say, make a huge slice of french toast but then only cut out the very center to make the plate prettier. "Presentation" is so fucking wasteful, I hate it.

On Great British Bake Off, Mel and Sue eat the trimmings. :)

I feel this way watching 'Hell's Kitchen'. I enjoy the show, but sometimes they throw out tons of stuff that isn't really inedible. I posted a question about it on the FB page of the show, and it got deleted, so...meh.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I know someone who worked on Masterchef UK and not only do the crew eat the leftovers but the judges use it to help make their judgements. The person whose food gets eaten the least by the crew is usually the one who goes home.
he claimed he puts on about 2 stone every series.
